*Frequency to urinate pressure on the bladder all day long**

Flare up since June 2017 chronic bleeding and diarrhea all day long. Started up prednisone over a week ago and since then I have had pressure on my bladder 24/7 it was so bad yesterday I went to the ER they ran some test xray , blood work ( anemic now ) no UTI infections and a CT scan which just showed inflammation in the colon which is causing the pressure on my bladder they said. I have never experienced this in my 24 years with colitis. I feel the need to urinate every 5 mins
Has anyone experienced this?

Last scope 25 cm ulcerated in June worst now.
Prednisone 40 mg down to 35 mg
cortifoam nightly
Cortiment release tablets ( didnt work)
Betnesol enamas ( didnt work )
entocort enemas ( didnt work)
solfalk 5asa ( didnt work )

I would suggest you see a urologist and be checked for interstitial cystitis. If you're male, have prostate checked.

I had an ultrasound done to check for cystitis plus a CT scan and they both showed nothing.

I get that. I sometimes do a monitstat anti fungal at night and it take the inflammation from my private part and it’s works. Maybe it’s a yeast infection. I don’t get all that nasty stuff, just pain when peeing.

Sorry to hear that! It could be a side effect of steroid med. Maybe it would help to get some advice on pelvic physical therapy-- because that can strengthen the muscles affecting the bladder. / Old Hat (37 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

They tested for any UTI all came back fine.. I just read a few posts that some on prednisone can experienced pain and frequency to urinate. That is my guess now since I lowered my dose on prednisone and some of the pain has subsided.

I have been reading healingwell posts for many years, and yours is the 1st that I can remember that claimed prednisone causes urgency and pain while urinating. It's possible that is the cause but if so it would have to be a very rare complication.

I don't have a definitive cause or solution. So, I'd just suggest having more tests done by other doctors to rule out other possibilities (if you haven't already done so). Have you seen an OBGYN and made sure there is nothing else going on, uterine or other complications that could explain your pains and troubles? Make sure there's no STD or other things that could be causing it (pain while urinating makes me ponder that, as it seems like some can).

I had a pelvic ultrasound as well as a transvaginal ultrasounds it just showed a small cysts on my ovary which is very common, had a CT scan also and it just showed inflammation of the bowels. This all in the last 2 weeks. Along with blood work to rule out any infections.
I never had the issue till i started up on the prednisone and now that i have decreased the amount the symptoms are starting to subside a bit. I came across it in a few posts and it is listed on the rare side effects for prednisone. My concern is it could be an electrolyte imbalance such as hyperglycemia ( too much salt ) which I read could lead to drug induced diabetes. mad

I had urgency incontinence early in this flare. It went away after I started Uceris.

Can I ask how old you are valli1234? I am post-menopausal, and after menopause bladder and urinary issues are more common.

I am 47 years old and experiencing perimenopause so far the only symptoms are my periods are further apart maybe 30 days apart now. I have never had any issues regarding pressure in my bladder other then pregnancies. Once I started the prednisone it happened almost right away.

Steroid use will alter hormones, which can affect hormone related changes in the body....some permanently if taken long term.
I suggest you see a urologist regardless and push for a bladder scope if your symptoms continue. Good you are tapering the pred.

Are the cysts endometrial?

Are you able to take any mesalamines? Are you also on rectal meds?

Great the UC isn't enough I will have to deal with Hormone issues now lol Good point regarding and urologist because this is getting exhausting running to the bathroom for my UC and now to pee all day long. I have had meltdowns of crying for 10-15 mins for no reason lately too now that makes sense regarding my hormones

No they were just two cysts on my ovaries pretty sure they have disappeared now. Nothing showed up in the CT scan.
I cant do mesalamines and I tried Solfalk enemas last week and i just poured blood all night. I am using cortiform and it seems to help
I was on two other enemas entocort enemas and betnesol enemas both worked for a bit then started to get worst.

I have said it before I don't want to start a new drug but I just gave my GI the ok for remicade seeing him next Monday.
The worst part about this disease is I have up and down hours this morning I cleaned the house tackled my job from home and actually felt normal till the middle of the afternoon, then it all went down hill with the UC and bladder issues .

I agree with Kazbern, being an older female myself. In case you feel the need for additional gyn consult, there are urogynecologists who specialize in women's issues, and also some rehab MDs who subspecialize in women's pelvic muscle PT. I've been getting this type of PT for post-TAH UT issues in recent months, and find it extremely helpful. Weakness of muscles in the pelvic area cannot be determined by CATscans or MRI; it's a functional issue. As Kazbern mentions, the bladder changes associated with menopause can bring on incontinence & need to be DXed in that context. I've had bladder problems which coincide with my UC flares for the past 10 or so years. It originally started as a really bad uti, and then I just kept getting them. Now whenever I have a flare, almost immediately feel it in my bladder, increased pressure, discomfort, frequency, I feel lime I never leave the toilet when flaring one way or the other! And prednisone makes it unbearable. I've seen a urologist and had a cystoscopy and was told that I didn't have interstitial cystitis but have trigonitis. The weird thing is my bladder is fine whilever my bowel is fine. But the second my bowel flares, my bladder flares too.

So either its hormones, prednisone, trigonitis or my UC triggering it at least I know I am not alone suffering with this unbearable pressure. Thank you all for your input. Will see what my GI says Monday regarding the above. Till then tylenol 2's every few hours will get me through the day.

Valli, unfortunately there is a strong link between the bowel and bladder, they share a lot of the same nerve pathways in that area so the messages can get crossed. There is also a lot of debate as to whether trigonitis is in fact a thing (is whether those different cells actually mean anything) or if it's just interstitial cystitis, now it's called painful bladder syndrome I think, they don't really know. There is also the proof that after an initial urinary tract infection, e coli can develop persistent forms and reside in the bladder lining, where they "wake up" during times of stress - this fits with my experience as I felt like I never actually got over that initial UTI. One thing that really helps me and gives me a lot of relief is D-mannose, it's just a simple sugar that you drink (no taste), I have a big glass a day and the relief is almost immediate and enough to push me in the right direction. I find probiotics also help, and help to get my UC under control so it's a double benefit.

You are not alone. I feel like I spend half the day in the bathroom and we should be buying shares in the toilet paper company. Some days are worse than others. It could be the pred but I've been on it for awhile and can't remember what its like to not be on it now!! I think its also part aging female bits as well. :-( Sorry I can't offer any solutions, only commiseration.
