"Gluten free" status is complicated. All of the cereal grains have gluten-like proteins called prolamins which the immune system can react to, even if it's not the gluten from wheat. They are all biochemically very similar to gluten and gliadin. For this reason, a lot of people who are gluten intolerant also can't eat oatmeal, even if it's "gluten free". The prolamin in oatmeal that's related to gluten is called avenin.
The current understanding that's unfolding is that anyone who has an immunological response to gluten should avoid all cereal grains, otherwise they may still be doing silent damage to their bowels.
Whose understanding is that?
