After Ostomy Surgery

Hi-My brother had his colon removed last week after suffering with UC for years. He was in a flare for months and finally had to have the surgery. He has been so weak and exhausted since then. He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday but had to go right back due to fever. he is home now but so exhausted, and a little out of it. Was it like that for anyone else? I am so worried.

Hello. I had my colon removed in April. Prior to it, I was in terrible shape. I was hospitalized 4 times in 4 months. I needed a walker to walk. I was extremely weak. After the surgery I was in the hospital for 2 weeks, because I was still weak. A tip for your brother is to drink a lot of water. Has he had blood work? I needed IV electrolytes, and prescriptions once discharged. Gatorade may help, try to get the ones without surcose.

I hope recovers quickly.

Hey, just had my surgery 2 weeks ago. Everyone is different and when you say he is "out of it" my first thought is he is probably on pain medication--that stuff can make you loopy and tired. Abd healing from surgery is a big job, especially when you are beat up already from being sick. It's great he has you to help care for him.

One thing for me--I was severely anemic and an iron infusion helped me post-op, plus I take EZFE iron pills 2xper day. I would imagine his docs have checked his iron levels but you might speak to the docs about his lack of energy and ask for test results/ask them to run labs/ask for suggestions about supplements he can take.
