Is there any other medication for colitis?

Had tried mesalamine and made my symptoms worse
Also on prednisone which is helping. On third week with
20mg a day and seems like its coming back again n
Doc says keep taking prednisone 30mg for
another month. Is there any
other drugs there out i can try? Having flare since July and saw the two gi. Thanks

While you are taking prednisone you will need to be taking another medication for maintenance, so that when you stop the prednisone you will not continue to have problems with bleeding. As you are allergic to mesalamine than you will need to speak with your GI about other options (like azathioprine) for example.

Did you tell you GI your problems with mesalamine, and did he not suggest another drug for you?


Prednisone is not a drug you want to be on long-term and so it is important that you start taking something asap so that you can then begin to taper the Prednisone.

Maintenance drug. Doct says 20mg than 10 for three more
Weeks and stop. I should be fine he says. I gave ulcerative colitis

I dont know. Second doctor told me one more month on prednisone and stop.
Never mention any maintenance drug afterwards. My next appointment with him is on the third week and will askhim.
