UC meds and asthma

Hi! I have ulcerative proctitis (5 weeks into first flare). I am asthmatic and I seem to have been steadily developing a wheeze over the past couple of days. I've been on the pred/octasa for five days. I've only just resorted to taking my reliever just now and it has alleviated a little.

I've heard that anti-inflammatory drugs are a no for asthmatics, but I don't know if they've given them to me knowing about my asthma or they haven't read my notes.

Are there any other asthmatics with UC on here? Have your meds ever affected you in this way?

not sure why anti-inflammatory meds would be a problem for someone with asthma - when i've used pred it definitely helped my asthma - don't recall mesalamine to be a problem -

you certainly could be reacting tho -

actually surprised you were put on prednisone for proctitis - hmmm ?

I have had no problems with UC meds and asthma meds, but I will say that I tend to have more asthma issues when my UC is flaring. Pred has always helped my asthma, of the 6 times in my life I have taken pred, only once was it for UC, the rest was to treat my asthma.

I'm on clenil modulite (steroid) daily and a salbutamol reliever. I was diagnosed 7 years ago and that's been it, more or less under control apart from 2 asthma attacks (the last one 3 years ago).

I'm still a tad wheezy and developed a cough, to be honest I'm starting to think that I may just have a cold...

In the past, I've always been told to stay away from NSAIDs due to the risk of them making asthma worse in some people. I was just wondering if octasa comes under that category?

Octasa isn't a NSAID. So, taking Octasa will have no adverse affect on your asthma.

NSAID is also known as ASA chemically.

Mesalamine-based anti-inflammatory medications like octasa are known as 5ASA chemically. Although they sound chemically similar, they are very different in affect on our body. Octasa is a 90 percent topical medication that's passed when you poop. The 10 percent that's absorbed into your blood is passed when you pee (and might slightly darken your pee).

There are many NSAID medications, but 5ASA is not one of them.

A cold can definitely exacerbate asthma. Do you have a regimen set up for you to increase the steroid inhaler when your symptoms increase?

The score for me is to double up on the steroid for 4-5 days, then if that doesn't work then it's off to the doctor! Still wheezy, dry cough. Again, may just be a cold smile
