Thank you God. Surgery set for Tuesday

Champ - You're right; I think the sicker we are when we go into the surgery, the harder it is because we have two things to recover from: the sickness of the UC flare and then also the surgery. But sometimes the most dramatic happy news stories we've heard are from these folks, because they gain so much QOL!

The way I see it, recovery will be what it will be. I told my work I would be MIA and could not guess at when they would see me. (I suspect I'll be working from home a few weeks before my next surgery, if indeed surgery #2 is 6 weeks after the first.)

I echo - don't figure you'll be doing work from the hospital. I didn't "feel" loopy, but I picked up a crossword puzzle and couldn't make sense of it, and also had trouble reading the time on the clock in the room! smile That kind of mental capacity wouldn't help your professional life.....

Lady I'm thinking if I had an IV in me now I would be close to feeling 100%,I'm probably 75% strength So once they hook me up to IV I'll be feeling better-I hope. I'm not bleeding just have BIG D. 24/7 which is making me weak. I know many people r at end of rope where they can't stop bleeding and emergency surgery is needed. I'm no where near that although I've had severe bleeding a few times. As far as work I'm a contractor who has put all work aside for January.I just want to focus on getting better for few weeks then go back to work with my guys doing any heavy lifting. Only work I would do from hospital is scheduling estimates when I'm better. Nothing major as far as work. I'm sure Tuesday I'll be in a fog. Not sure yet what time surgery is. Hope it's in morning. Don't want to sit in hotel all empty and weak waiting til afternoon so Hopeing surgery is in the AM

Well made it into city without a pit stop. Checked into hotel(nice room). For my LAST SUPPER I got deluxe cheeseburger with fries. Now I wasn't sure if I could eat it all. Brought it back to room. Put on some football and was able to eat it all which surprised me. Tomorrow I go see Stoma nurse at 2. Start drinking poison at 3ish. Better enjoy food tonight. Might be many days before I enjoy food

You're on the way to a new and improved you! I'm with you in spirit, Champ!

I learned: when they first did offer me actual food, to eat TINY bits. Chew well, sip water, and aim to eat a teaspoon or two - better safe than sorry. The other thing I think did good was to ask for nausea meds at any sign of queasiness. With all their messing with stomache muscles, I didn't to be heaving if I could prevent it!

Yea. I'm sure I'll be nervous about eating after surgery. I'll approach all food with caution after surgery. You and Valli and others have been a big help with everything u have gone thru. Looking forward to time where I don't have to plan my trips around where do I stop if I have To go??? I know every fast food toilet on Long Island. All my Dunkin Donut friends will be disappointed when I'm not stopping in on a weekly basis. Only good things ahead. Thanks for sharing your journey with us

Just checking in on you.

My ostomy support group have all shared stories about how they felt when they woke up.... Most of them were ready to eat and go home...a couple had nausea issues for a few days...we all stated that although we felt the pain from the surgery we also felt healthier. (And this was for everyone....regardless of how well or how sick we were when we went in for surgery...regardless of male or female...and there are 50 of us in our group) We all also noticed an immediate profound improvement with our quality of life. And we all agreed...the prep is yucky....lol...

Me? I had a little hick up the first 48 hours...but... by 72 hours I ate fish, mashed potatoes, green beans and had no problems... The one thing the doctor told me was to chew every bite 50 to 75 times and to drink lots of water while eating. I don't have problems as long as I do that....

I'm ready for whatever comes my way. Had too much anesthesia 2x for colonoscopy. Had dry heaves once I woke up. That was bad. Maybe it will prepare me for surgery. I'm sure I'm getting plenty more anesthesia for surgery then scope. Last few weeks I've been chewing instead of the usual inhaling that I usually do so my chewing has gotten practice. Thanks

Just got back from seeing Stoma nurse. Got a lot of knowledge about all. Will start dealing with actual bag tomorrow or Wednesday after surgery. Start drinking poison soon. Happy day is finally here

I must say the Cornell setup seemed to be in constant disarray, massive turnover in staff, terrible infusion room (at the Jill Roberts Center--across the street was better), etc. How is Mt. Sinai worse? Just curious as I will likely be making the switch and am wondering what I'm getting into. Thanks for any info.

I was referring to the hospital rooms, staff and GI floor at Mt Sinai. I stayed there in 2005 & 2008 and did not like it, the place looked old, dreary and the staff wasn't as nice but that was 10 years ago so a lot could have changed. I really liked NYP Cornell's setup better, the hospital rooms and nursing staff.

I only had an infusion at NYP Cornell once when I started Stelara. I didn't have a problem with the infusion Center on the 4th floor but I was only there once for an hour.

I'm not sure why he is moving but it looks like he got a promotion and is the Director of IBD Clinical Studies and recruitment. He originally started at Mt Sinai so maybe he wanted to go back to where he began.

I think there is a GI War between the main 3 hospitals in NYC; NYP, Mt Sinai and NYU. They are recruiting some of the best doctors & surgeons in the country. I think NYU recently built a new floor/wing for GI patients and hired some doctors/surgeons away from the Cleveland Clinic. NYP Cornell did the same thing 15 years ago with Colorectal surgery patients.

I'm going to follow him over to Mt Sinai too.

Thinking of you !! Hoping to hear how everything went 👼👼 sending well wishes . Trust me everyday gets a bit easier . I was told today by my daughter that I actually look health and radiant ( that was the a sure sign I am now on the mend ) it takes a bit but you will get there.
