VSL causing diarrhea

I used to be on this and the crohn's forum and have been in remission since my resection in 2010. I had another form of colitis but people here were so kind and informative, they let me stay and helped me a lot.
My Prometheus blood test, ASCA was off the chart for crohn's but they said my biopsies didn't show that.

My colon has been acting funny after having 6 UTI's this year and having to take microbid. I got a prescription for VSL #3 DS from my doc hoping it would fix me up and it gave me diarrhea really bad today. It never used to do this to me before. It was from a different company, they said it was generic.

Has anyone else had this problem??? I pray my colitis isn't coming back but this is just how it acted before except I am not having much pain or blood. They took me off all meds after the surgery and said it wouldn't come back.

Different kinds of probiotics are handled well or badly by different guts. VSL company has had a change of owners and there "may" have been some changes in the proprietary formula (I read that the man who formulated it started his own company).

I have not ordered VSL since this happened but if you tolerated it before and now it's causing problems then perhaps the formula is not the same. Or maybe your gut has changed it's microbiome and doesn't like you adding new kinds of biotics.

If it continues for 2-3 days of taking it I'd quit for sure. Have you tried other types of probiotics? Maybe try and find the original VSL formula from whoever owns it now.

Check out Visbiome probiotics (as this is the company the original VSL scientist now runs)

You used it only once, Or a while before the diarrhea?

Are you on meds for UC? And maybe ask for stool testing.

Sprout let, it is the Visbiome brand.
In the past year when I take the VSL #3 pill, which has fewer bacteria, I do ok.
Now it seems when I take the the packets, it gives me diarrhea. I think I am done with these high dose probiotics.

quincy, nope, they said I didn't need meds after my surgery........... People on this forum after my surgery told me to be leery of that but the doctor said it wasn't a good idea. They didn't work for me anyway, Lialda, colazal, the rowaza enemas was all they would try. They wouldn't try the biologics, said I wasn't sick enough. Ha, ha, ha!!! Easy for him to say, it wasn't ruining his life. It was a very rare form of colitis.
They said I had IBS on top of it but funny that the "IBS" went away with the surgery... If it was truly IBS, surgery would not have worked. They warned me about that my IBS would continue. Haven't had a moment's trouble in 7 years until after all these antibiotics I had to take. I am sure my normal flora were ruined.

I'll go to see a good Functional medicine doc. She will order a stool test to assess all the bacteria in my gut. It's very comprehensive.
