How long does Mezavant take to work?

Hi all.
I am in the throes of a VERY persistent proctitis flare.
Symptoms are urgency, blood and mucus.
Doc has me on 2 pentasa suppositories per day which hasn't worked as yet.
He has now just added mezavant tablets - 3 per day.

As far as colitis goes I know I am lucky as it is only the last 10 cm which are affected. However my flares are very stubborn. If this does not work Gi wants to move on to Azathioprine which I really would rather avoid.

Anyone know how long mezavant may take to have an effect?
Or anything else you can suggest?
Anyone tried nicotine patches?

I’ve never taken or heard of mezavant but I’m guessing it’s a mesalamine? If it is it should kick in rather quickly maybe a few weeks. Sometimes people quit smoking and get a UC diagnosis soon after, these patches can help them but I’m not sure if they will be able to help someone who’s never smoked.

i would also suggest adding salofalk 2g enemas to the mix -

I would go for 4g plus a supp during the day.

Quincy - what do you mean by 4g? 4grams? Of mezavant? Sorry - reasonably new to all this.

Mezavant is mesalamine/mesalazine.
I mean 4g dosage of mesalamine retention enemas adding to TT's post

"How long does Mezavant take to work?" Most experience symptom improvements within 3-4 weeks.

Mezavant = Lialda, both made by shire and the name varies by country.

I'd try steroid suppositories/ foams/ enemas in addition if you've not gotten a response from mesalamine. You might be lucky to have proctitis but it is still very stubborn. Our most severe inflammation is always within our rectum and it can be a real bugger to beat.

Azathioprine is sometimes needed for a proctitis, certainly try a few other things first but do use aza if all else fails.
