Hello everyone, I followed up with my GI and he is set on it being acute proctitis. He doesn't want to prescribe me any more meds after the Canasa made me worse as he feels it will heal on its own. I am in the process of getting a second opinion, but until then, what do you guys recommend as far as supplements and natural ways of trying to rid my self of this, or at least help it calm down.

Vitamin E suppositories come to mind, available Amazon. Also epsom salts baths might help. I wonder if you are intolerant of mesalamine or it was some other ingredient in the Canasa that made you worse.

Not sure any oral supplement will reach that far. Topical treatments have worked better for me.
Wish they had commercially available turmeric suppositories, that would be a good thing.

Check into resistant starch diet- foods like pasta, cooked rice, raw plantain powder or potato starch which helps proctitis.

Also look into butyrate enema.

Thank you both for the tips. Imagardener, I am not sure. My symptoms at first was light back pain and stomach pain with some urgency. I started the Canasa and ended up with twice the amount of gas, along with stomach gurgles. My stools also became a little looser once I started it. I feel that it made it much worse. I was told Canasa was supposed to be one of the safer meds smh.

Canasa is safe as long as you aren't allergic to it!
You could try wild oregano oil and thyme oil, do a search for it in the forums and you will see lots of posts dedicated to it. Curcuim also helps, there have been many studies on it.

did the doc say what was supposed to have caused the acute proctitis?

I would try oat bran or oatmeal to get some butyrate fermentation going to help healing.

you are lucky not to have ulcerative procitits

DBwithUC, Well, I took Amoxicillin and he believes I had an reaction to the antibiotic since it happened so fast. I questioned him saying that antibiotics have been associated with causing IBD, but he keeps telling me to trust him. I don't want him to think I am questioning his knowledge, so I am trying to be patient. I have had the proctitis since early July with no relief, so I am not sure how that is considered acute. But, he believes my body may have fought off an infection that left lingering proctitis. I hope he is right, but I will be cautious and on the look out for any new symptoms, such as increased mucus or blood as I am seeing none at the moment.

Momto2boys, I am taking curicum at the moment. Hopefully that does help some. I will search for posts about the oregano oil and thyme. I must have been allergic to the Canasa. I felt so nasty the morning after taking them smh. Thanks again.

I discovered your feeds after days and days of searching for someone who has symptoms like mine and no diagnosis so thought I would drop you a message. Like you I have mild proctitis which was diagnosed 10 months after symptoms started via the lovely colonoscopy. Biopsies showed no uc or crohns so they decided to treat me for possible infection. I was given 500mg mesalamine suppositories twice a day for 6 weeks which worked straight away however 5 weeks after stopping them symptoms have started to come back. Have to have another scope in 2 weeks so will hopefully find out more then.
It is just so debilitating to not have an official diagnosis and it all takes so long. I am so glad that I have found someone who is sort of in my shoes.

Google vitamin e enemas, the first website that returns has great info. A few years ago I couldn't stop my bleeding rectum/proctitis. After 5 days of ramping up per his protocol I was fixed, healed, no more bleeding, all natural, no meds. Hope that helps!

hmmm when i was diagnosed with proctitis back in 2006, i was able to get rid of it following a whole food, unprocessed diet. it stayed in remission for maybe 3-4 years but came back to almost kill me many times after that. i wouldn't go totally med free but definitely add in some natural inflammation fighters like curcumin, omega 3 fatty acids, resistant starch foods. I've stuck diaper cream up my butt quite a few times when it's very sore. i didn't have any luck with vitamin e up the hooter and emptying all those little capsules took forever.

I was just wondering if you ever managed to get the proctitis under control and if you were ever given an official diagnosis?

maybe i missed something = were you only given mesalamines to treat the infection ?

Yes they only gave me mesalamine 2 a day for 6 weeks.
They said it would treat inflammation caused by an infection or the start of what could be ibd.
I am with a new dr now and having another scope next Thursday so hopefully get more answers. The biopsies only showed inflammation on the outside mucosal layer and didn't go any deeper than that so not typical of someone with crohns or uc. All very confusing

It's pretty common for a infectious-Proctitis (also known as acute proctitis) diagnosed patient to be given anti-inflammatory mesalamine on a temporary basis. If the Proctitis infection clears and goes away then you're fine and don't have to deal with medications again.

However, sometimes infectious-Proctitis turns into the chronic Ulcerative Proctitis (UP) and requires an ongoing maintenance medication for life. UP is a type of Ulcerative Colitis. This sounds like your case, and another colonoscopy with biopsies should clarify the UP diagnosis. As certainly your symptoms are no longer acute (short term) at this point.

How is everybody doing with their proctitis? I am still struggling as well. Such a terrible feeling. Has anyone tried cannabis suppositories for proctitis?

I’Ve just had a colonoscopy and have been told, To no surprise, that I have chronic Proctitus. (Have had IBS for years)So I immediately started researching natural remedies. I thought about cannabis suppositories or essential oils and would be interested in knowing if anyone has success with these.
