Mesalamine

Hi Guys:

This is all still new to me - meaning I have only just been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and it does take some getting used to. My GI prescribed Mesalamine enemas which I have done for about 4 weeks. I went to see him on Monday and he now wants me to start taking Mesalamine 1.2 gm tablets. I have just filled the prescription. I was a little nervous whilst talking with the doctor, but I did ask if it was OK to take the enemas with the tablets (I have constipation, not diarrhea so they have been helping me). I can’t remember now whether he said I could take them both together or whether I have to stop taking the tabs when I use the enemas. I know he said I could still use the enemas.

It might seem a stupid question, so I apologize if it does sound stupid - but I just thought I would ask and hopefully someone can help me with this.

By the way, the tablets are huge, I just hope I can swallow them OK ☹️☹️

Yes....best to have above the sigmoid covered regardess.

Ive done both for over 29 years.
You won't need to be on the enemas nightly forever....once your symptoms have normalised, you should start tapering slowly (which we can help you with) and remain at a maintenance level. I suggest 2x weekly.
