Perhaps quack medicine is not so quack.
I have taken a lot myself, no help but perhaps not enough.
Here is a new mechanism.

very interesting, I've also read that baking soda has loads of still undiscovered healthy properties. I've never taken it internally, but I use a mixture of baking soda and apple vinegar for cleaning things at home instead of chemicals. Apple vinegar mixed with warm water is fantastic for cleaning wooden floors.

I never thought much of it, but when I first started the WOO thing it was summer and I was really active. For a very long time I would make 1 litre of distilled water, one tablespoon of baking soda, one teaspoon of sea salt and a fresh juiced orange or two. I would drink this once a day. Home made Gatorade in a sense. Maybe it was doing some good. Sure quenches the thirst. Might be worth giving it a go in higher amounts as you suggest.
I also remember reading something about
it being banned for athletes - or proposed to be banned due to performance enhancement. Something along those lines.

so fortunately your colitis cannot be that bad Mark, if I drank your mixture, I'd surely ended up at the emergency

I would be weary of long term adjustments in the microbiome in larger doses. I haven't looked into this though but I did notice this was a fairly short trial with a limited focus measurement wise. I don't recall the limits of how much bicarbonate can be offset and/or absorbed without risk of reaching the colon which would change the microbial environment. I would look into this if I were planning to trial this for more than a few days.
