Just finished tapering off Prednisone, now have itchy burning rash

My son, 17, just finished tapering off steriods. He has been on for 4 months. Now he has itching burning rash on arms, stomach and chest. His GI recommends going to his PCP. Is this normal? He looks awful. I feel so bad. I am sure this is a side effect. How can this be treated, or does it go away on its own?

The prednisone might have been masking the rash. One of the major symptoms of my first flare and the onset of this disease were chronic hives EVERYWHERE. They’re an inflammatory reaponse. The prednisone I have been on made them go away. I just moved to 10mg in my taper and the hives are coming back. I am hoping the Humira will kill them along w any other inflammation.

I'd agree with the above. I'd see his primary care doctor. Try an antihistamine and/or steroid cream on the rash?

Thank you for your responses, we went to the PCP this morning. I advised him of his history, and after thinking about changes in washing our clothes. I have switched to Borax along with normal laundrey detergent about 2 weeks ago. Doc thinks that may have contributed. He has prescribed 1 week of Prednisone 40 mg tapering to 10mg in 7 days. Ugh!! I hope this takes care of it. I feel bad for him if I have caused this.

If the change in laundry detergent caused the rash then it would be considered to be a Contact-Dermatitis. I've had that several times. I'd recommend using unscented and very mild soaps and shampoos. Ask your pharmacist for a soap and shampoo that's safe for those who have eczema and psoriasis, and that'll get you the best thing to use when you've got a rash. Mild laundry detergents should also be used.

Skin issues are common with UC (dry, itchy skin, and rashes), our skin can have allergic reactions to things that stay on our skin for a long time.

FYI, the All Free and Clear is the only stuff that does not mess with my skin. I don't add any softener or other products, or dryer sheets. [if you've got a Costco, the Costco version is actually All]

Thank you, I have been looking at Arm and Hammer for sensitive skin. I'll also check out All. He just looks so bad, poor thing. He is a senior in high school. This is not a good look.
