Imodium - how much and when?

I have never resorted to imodium before but things are getting rapidly worse (eg. accident last night, made it home but only as far as the garage...) and I have a social thing I need to go to this weekend. How much should I take and how far in advance do I need to take it? How long will it last?

Take according to bottle directions, an hour before the event. Imodium slows down the bowels which buys you more time. It doesn't stop the bowels

When I go on long drive trips I live on Imodium. My doctor says there are no long term side affects. With that being said, I only do this when I absolutely need to as I'm not fond of having to use gas station washrooms. Quick Release Imodium works pretty good to slow down the diarrhea. But IPoop is right, it doesn't stop it altogether.

^relieved to hear the opinion of another doctor. I use Imodium when I am truly desperate (eg traveling and unsure what the bathroom access will be) and when I mentioned using Imodium on an upcoming trip, my doctor said I shouldn’t and if I’m that concerned about my BMs I should cancel my trip.

Lol! I’m actually pretty close to doing just that. Supposed to be having a flex sig in July and depending on how that goes and her best advice on a best course of action, I might actually go back to my GP seeking a referral elsewhere.

Well, I took a dose and it worked perfectly! Made it through the evening, although I avoided eating/drinking as they are often triggers, and made it home without any urgency. It's my new favourite thing!

I took a dose (2) pills yesterday at about 1PM and it worked well -- I was out and about all day and evening, and even ate. I do wish it would have worn off earlier, as I started getting gassy today about noon, but couldn't poop until just now (almost 5pm). I think I will try 1 pill next time. I only plan to use it if I have D/urgency, and I need to be out somewhere that might not have immediate bathroom access.

My doctor is ok with occasional use if the flare is recovering well or if I have a few days of passing Lialda nearly whole. His rule is no more than 1 a day and no more than 3 days in a row and if anything feels wrong to call in immediately. I have taken it on days when I have to be at the airport at 5:30 am. I usually take it an hour before I have to leave the house and after I have already had one BM for the day.

It will really slow down the peristalsis in the digestive tract. If one continues to use it with UC, toxic megacolon can happen.

Periodic use can be helpful in situations.
