The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation has been supporting research into the causes of IBD. There are three: an impaired immune system, an imbalanced gut microbiome, and genetics.
This organization also recently funded a study into probiotics and their affect on mice. If I remember correctly, the study's details and conclusions were as follows:
After giving bad bacteria to the experimental group and not the control group, neither group of mice had a colon flareup.
After putting both groups under stress, the experimental group got colon flareups. The control group didn't.
After giving probiotics to the experimental group, the experimental group's symptoms improved.
The results of this study show that the gut microbiome can cause ulcerative colitis, that probiotics can help reduce symptoms, and that while stress doesn't cause ulcerative colitis, it can trigger colon flareups in people with ulcerative colitis.
I agree that immunosuppressive meds and surgery will one day seem as primitive as bloodletting. I'm not so sure about
FMT though. I think FMT can help balance the gut microbiome. It might not fix the immune system though.
