I’ve had UC for 22 years and am currently having the worst flare up ever. I’ve been getting low grade fevers which I’ve never experienced before. The pain has been so extreme that it makes me vomit. My specialist says he needs to do a colonoscopy to see what is going on but nothing is available till October. I’ve almost gone to the hospital a few times. Should I be concerned? I’ve been taking sulphasalazine for 12 years and it has worked well up until now. Just wondering if fevers is a bad sign?

Personally, I'd say waiting for a colonoscopy until October is unacceptable on your doctor's end. His patient is clearly having bad symptoms that need addressed. I'd put the pressure on him to either get you a colonoscopy scheduled ASAP or see if another doctor within his practice/hospital could do it. I'd hate for you to put a colonoscopy off for a few months if you are having these kind of symptoms.

Which country are you in? Often doctors offices have empty, emergency slots within their schedule to take care of patients who are experiencing a flare, ask. Ask if you can fill any cancellation slots for endoscopy. Ask about a flexible-sigmoidoscopy (goes about 1/2 as far).

Yes, we can get low-fevers or nausea as a consequence of having an UC flare.

I’m in Canada. The price for our free health care is a wait list sometimes. I am on the cancellation list so hopefully I will get called sooner. If I go to the emerge things might move along faster, which is why I was asking about fevers being normal, that might be my reason for an ER visit.

I've heard of others going to the ER, to get admitted as hospital in-patient to see a gasteroenteroligist sooner and get a colonocopy sooner. Here in the USA, the ER is a crazy expensive option and therefore usually not recommended for that purpose. Internationally, the ER cost may be minimal or nonexistent and thus that might be a viable option for you.

We have some Canadian posters who might know a bit more about your options. What providence? That sometimes matters...

Thanks for your input. I’ll wait a few more days and see what this fever does. I’m thinking a call to my specialist and possibly a hospital visit might be the answer. Thanks again.

I'd go to the ER if I were you. I vomit when my flares reach extreme levels, and my GI said it's because the inflammatory factors in the blood make the body somewhat toxic. Whenever the vomiting starts from the pain or from the fever, my CRP is usually over 100 and I need immediate prednisone or the inflammatory cascade just gets worse and worse until I am deathly ill.

If your heart rate gets really fast, you have trouble breathing, your vision gets blurry or you can't walk too well, get to the ER asap. You live in Canada so you have nothing to lose by trying.

Where in canada?

Have you been to see your GI? Did he requisition blood testing?
Did he take a look-see in the office? Did he have you do stool samples? Did he give you rectal meds???

Hi there I'm currently flaring with fevers. I went to the hospital for 2 nights in April and it got better but the fever is back since the end of last month. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I take Tylenol and my uc meds.
