well proof that the purple splatter in toilets is from the 5asa meds...
for 7 years I've had to bleach my toilet seat weekly(if not more)... since coming off my 5asa meds in July...
NO MORE PURPLE STAINS!!! YEAH!!!

delta, not sure.. but it did it both with Asacol for years and then Mezavant for years!
although I've said before I also think there is something in certain cities water supply that reacts as it always does it at home but for the month or so I spend at my sister's in the summer in another town it does not do it nearly as much.. perhaps chlorine lever or something like that...

I only get the purple stains when I use rectal meds. I also only notice it when I am flaring. I can use rectal suppositories every day and not see any purple if I am in remission. Just another fun thing about
UC - cleaning the toilet constantly.

I have purple toilet! My wife is after me to replace the seat. It is pretty gross.

i find the stains are the worst under the toilet seat and are near impossible to remove, however I have been off of all mesalamine for about
5 days now... and the stains have disappeared! lol

Can I just say how relieved I am to see this thread. I had to have all sorts of tests as I was apparently urinating dark red water. The doctors could not find anything wrong with me and the UC consultant didn't give me any advice and had never heard of it. I figured out by myself it was a reaction outside my body. It seems to happen if the toilet is recently bleached and the bleach has been left to dry for a while. As a result, my toilet seats also need changing!!!

Funny the doctors did not know this, it says "might darken urine" in the pamphlet included with Mesalamine meds. Yes purple toilet splashes, and high-water mark in the toilet stink!

The first time I noticed the purple I was totally freaked out! At least when I see blood, I know what it is and where it is coming from lol. It wasn’t until I read another thread on here that I realized it wasn’t abnormal

I've changed toilet seat after toilet seat. I thought it was just me because when I mentioned it to my doctor he said he'd never heard of it. I'm off those particular meds now(Pentasa) so I don't have to worry about
it anymore. It used to be quite embarrassing when company came over, I'd always worry they didn't think I ever cleaned the toilet. Glad I'm not the only one.

It's from the enemas, I always thought.

All mesalamines, oral and rectal, cause the purple.

I have the exact same thing too!!!! I don’t use rectal meds but take mesalazine orally. I had always thought that it might be an overgrowth or harmful bacteria colonizing the toilet (since UCers have a more pathogenic flora), glad that it’s not that! I’ve also found that it’s reduced when I use non-bleach based cleaners.
