Post op J Pouch

Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with UC at the start of 2016 right after turning 14 and after prolonged usage of immunosuppressants I had my total colectomy with end ileostomy in June this year but due to frequent blockages the surgeons created a J Pouch with a loop ileostomy about 6 weeks ago. The J pouch was not meant to be functional but for some reason my stoma had retracted into my skin and 1/5 of my stool would come down the end and the rest went into my bag. I've had continuous leakage through out the day and night, usually accompanied with some blood so my surgeon suggested to just completely remove the stoma and get everything moving normally again. I agreed and my surgery is booked for tomorrow at 10am. But starting next week on Tuesday I have my AS Cambridge exams. The first couple are practical exams and will require me to stand for periods of times. Given my current situations with leakages etc. Will I be okay to sit these exams 5 days post op? These are really important exams so I need to know. Thanks for any input.

Genius just had 3rd surgery Aug 21st. I'm not one who likes to sit and wait to get 100%. I'm self employed and need to work. BUT you really need rest. To me taking test right after surgery is too soon. I gave my body 2-3-4 weeks after each surgery. Talk with teachers and explain your situation. Let your body heal

Thank you for the replies, I have my surgery in about an hour and I am on the way to the hospital now. I will apply for a special consideration regarding my exams and hopefully after 2 weeks I will be well enough to sit the rest I'll stay posted regarding my my situation.

Good luck with the Takedown! Hopefully you will recover fast. I am just over two weeks from my takedown. I am finally see some moments of normalcy but, I agree this has been much harder to adjust to then the ostomy. I was hoping to jump right back into work. I’ve got projects falling apart and as much as I need to get back, I’m just not there yet. Crossing my fingers I can head in at least part time after 3 weeks. I would ask for more then a 2 week extension on your exams if it’s an option.

Hi everyone so I had my surgery and I honestly got really lucky, out of the hospital in 3 days with no diarrhoea! Maybe that is attributed the large doses of Morphine I have to take for pain. One thing I noticed is I can't stomach milk anymore Hopefully I will sit my exam in 2 days because otherwise I will most definitely get a 0% with it only being bumped to 20% maximum. Unfortunately there are no extensions as it is an international exam that must be sat at the same time across the globe. Thanks everyone for being so supportive

that is fantastic. I actually did quite well after my 3rd step. I didn't take pain meds once I was out of the hospital, and I was getting out and about shortly after. I did however take fairly frequent bathrooms trips, and I dealt with a lot of butt burn, which wouldn't necessarily stop you from sitting through a test.

I was giving you the harsh reality earlier, but it's not always too harsh, sometimes people adjust fairly easily. Hopefully things continue to work out for you so you can get through your test.

I could never stomach milk. it grosses me out. I never worried too much about what i ate following closure. I was back to my regular preUC diet. I didn't really ease into new foods. I was eating everything I had missed out on for years. I did try to eat smaller portions initially.
