A. this specimen compromises multiple fragments of small intestinal mucosa showing retention of normal villous architecture. No activity or granulomata are seen. no increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes evident. no parasites identified.
B,D,F,G. Each of these specimens compromises multiple fragments of large intestinal mucosa. The proximal biopsies show relative preservation of crypt architecture, how ever there is increasing crypt distortion in the more distal biopsies. There is a patchy chronic inflammation and active change. Incorporating cryptitis and crypt abscess change formation. Areas of ulceration are noted, particularly in the distal biopsies. There is prominent peyer’s patch hyperplasia. No granulomata are seen. No parasites are identified.
C + E. This specimen compromises multiple fragments of large intestinal mucosa. Showing retention of normal crypt architecture, there is retention of normal inflammatory gradient, with no activity or granulomata seen. No parasites identified.
Summary-
A,C,E within normal limits.
B,D,F,G. Patchy proctocolitis consistent with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. Further designation requires clinicopathological correlation.
