Raw Salmon - Sushi

I have UC and I’m currently in a mild flare.

I had sushi today for lunch and it had raw salmon. Is this bad ? Will it aggravate my colon?

If you are on drugs that lower your immune response then sushi is probably not a good idea due to the risk of parasites. If you are not and it doesn't seem to bother you then you should be able to continue to enjoy it.

I avoided sushi when I was struggling with a UC flare, but it was one of the most difficult things for me to avoid since i love it so much. I wouldn't think it's actually 'bad' for UC, but I agree with crapper, a low immune system + raw anything can = trouble. If you're not on immune suppressing medication, you're probably fine (and even if you are, you're likely fine, but I remember when my blood counts were low from medication, they told me no raw, no fruits with skins...).

Ask your doctor but if the fish is flash frozen like most states require then you shouldn’t have any problems.

If you’re on an immune surpressent then you stay away from raw shellfish like oysters, clams, etc... that’s where people get sick. The really bad bacteria infection sick.

Some studies have shown in the past that Fish oils & faty acids are good for UC. Cooking the fish will eliminate some of those oils so you’re better off eating them rare if that’s your goal.

I've never had raw fish sushi....nor will I ever. Ugh. Never worth the risk possible parasite-wise.

Hope you enjoyed it, however.

I never eat raw sushi and didn’t know it was raw until it was delivered since they didn’t specify if it was raw or cooked on their menu, and didn’t want it to go to waste

Ya’ll are scaring me, now I regret eating raw salmon. I’m literally looking up parasites.

I’m not on any immune surpressent medication - I don’t think my Lialda tablets are apart of that.

In the US parasites are your least issue with sushi—“sushi grade” fish is all frozen for a minimum amount of time in order to kill any potential parasites. The bigger issue would be storage/handling at the restaurant, as with any food. Since the sushi isn’t cooked, you have less “forgiveness” if it isn’t handled or stored properly. I wouldn’t worry about it.

As someone else mentioned, anything that comes directly out of the water and into your mouth should probably be a concern. Which sucks epically for me, as I love raw oysters. But not enough to get food poisoning again.

If you’re only on Lialda, I wouldn’t worry about any of it. I ate sushi all the time while on Lialda, raw oysters, too. The raw isn’t inherently bad for the UC unless it causes problems for you. That said, I did tend to avoid anything raw while flaring, which was more a mental precaution than any particular concern.

I've tried one piece of sushi here-and-there and have been fine, no troubles. My dear wife loves sushi, and she'll get it as an appetizer at restaurants that have good sushi. She's pretty happy to eat it all herself, but occasionally goads me on to trying a piece, and I will. There's increased risk for us, but we're talking smaller risks.

I'm just not a big fan of raw fish, without UC I would be about the same in response to her lol.

No problem! My doctor didn’t have any issue with the sushi/oysters beyond standard concerns. Not sure where the new doc stands since I’m on meds that affect my immune system, but avoidance was not listed in the precautions they gave me.

I eat sushi all the time just fine. As long as they flash freeze the fish to a certain temperature, all parasites die if there are any.

For me it's the gluten in the soy sauce and other Japanese food that I have to avoid! So that mostly meats I just eat nigiri or sashimi. A lot of the different rolls and sauces have additives that upset me.
