In general - curious about the attitudes about integrative doctors. They are doctors right? I have no doubt many over test - I would do a pretty vigilent search - why do some of you think they would be a waste?
Thanks for your feedback.
The best doctors for treating IBD are doctors who are highly-trained specialists in IBD, i.e. gastroenterologists. They know which are the important diagnostic tests and they understand the treatment options on a deep level.
If you go to an integrative doctor you may get some helpful adjunct treatments for quality of life, but they do not have the expertise to target IBD and may order a ton of tests that you don't need, may not interpret test results correctly, or in the worst case scenario you may delay getting the correct medical treatment that you need and the colitis may escalate.
During various phases of desperation with my colitis I have dabbled in different things and "experts", including an ayurvedic doctor who told me I need to tell my mother once a week that I love her and pay (him) 300 a month for special supplements in order to get better - no thank you. I have made my flares more severe by believing that I need to fix something in my mind in order to get better - and delaying telling the hospital how bad it was because I was afraid of the stronger medications... made myself very ill by taking chlorella supplements (recommended by a yoga teacher who claimed she had studied medicine)... In the end, the ONLY thing that made me feel better was conventional medication under the care of a gastroenterologist.
