Hi all - this is a bit of a continuation from my initial post/reply on “Diet (SCD especially)....”

Brief overview: my husband has moderately severe left-sided UC and has been in an uncontrollable flare since June 2018. As a last resort, I’ve made him try the SCD protocol. At this time, He’s on remicade + methotrexate + 40mg prednisone, and these have been only helping minorly.

He’s been on the SCD diet for just under a week (Feb 18-22). Current SCD results:
- intro for 2-1/2 days
- frequency: 10-15 urgent BMs to 2-4/day
- stools: bloody and loose to clear/tan and minor blood
- stage 1/days 3-5
- frequency: dropped to 1-2x/day, with only 1 being urgent
- stools: are more formed, but still a little blood

Overall:
- progress is progress and this is the closest to remission he’s had in over a year! We will continue to stay on it and document updates. Fingers crossed it continues to work.

Additional notes:
- continues to take mutaflor

Just to add, we’ve introduced a banana (brown spots), pretty sure it’s the culprit for causing a lot of gas and cramping in the evening, however, there was still a good poo!

Trying out the very well cooked bacon today.

Wow the results through five days are incredible. Hopefully you continue to see evidence the improvment correlates to the SCD. Please keep us posted! I JUST got my Luvele SCD/GAPS yogurt maker delivered and I’m heating up some milk for my first batch of yogurt now smile

Hi Levi, have you already cut out dairy? Does it usually give you any problems?

I would LOVE to try the SCD yogurt but my husband is worse with dairy!

He’s been having better stools the further we get into the diet. He’s still pretty limited in food choices - not doing carrots, cut out the apple cider as we think it may be causing some negative effects....but bacon has been added successfully! Another positive update, we jumped ahead and tried out rice last night at dinner. No blow back from that! So that’s our good news. I stress that even with all of his meds, he was still in a bad way.

Day 5 update of real time experiences on the SCD -
Frequency: almost near eliminated
Stools: still 1-2x/daily, but formed, minimal to no blood

Foods introduced: rice last night = no adverse reaction; chicken wings tonight = no adverse reaction! Removed bananas and apple cider from diet (anything fruit) = adverse reaction

So glad it's working for him so quickly! I love the yogurt. I've had adverse reactions to it in the past when I introduced it while still having bad symptoms. But when my symptoms are under control, I tolerate it very well and I do believe the probiotics in it help. Can't be be sure on that, but even if the probiotics aren't doing much it's just a good source of protein and calcium, I throw some berries, honey and nuts and it's a nice nutritious breakfast or snack. My advice would be ease into it slowly and see if he can tolerate it. I've read that the way it's prepared gets rid of much of the lactose - likewise with more fermented dairies like hard cheese - so hopefully he's ok with it. I do not have problems with dairy in general though so can't advise on that. I wish you continued success!

Hey lopomme-I've never had a problem that I could connect to dairy to I'm thinking of trying cow's milk yogurt on my next batch. (I used a quart out of goat's milk over the weekend).

I was already doing well after starting a 60 mg pred taper a few weeks ago so I did not do any type of SCD starter diet or more restrictive diet this time, just started making 'typical' SCD recipes. The yogurt is actually not bad all on it's own-just poured it in a mason jar and brought it with me to work. I'll have some cow's milk yogurt ready by Thursday.

His continual progress is incredible, hope it keeps up!

By the way rice is a no-no on scd... not criticising, just clarifying for those who may stumble across this post in the future. Hopefully this regimen continues to work for your husband.
