Trouble finding VSL#3 Double Strength/Is this a flare?

My 15 year old UC son has been in remission for a few years and was on VSL#3 Double Strength (prescription strength packets 1 per day) for the last 3 years but pharmacy recently said it was on backorder and not being made and so a couple of months ago I switched him to Visbiome. I feel like he has been complaining of not feeling right ever since i made the switch but since they have all the same ingredients i thought it was just coincidental. Last few weeks he is having increased stomach pain, increased urgency, looser stools and some bleeding. Im not sure if it is a UC flare (he has a few episodes of diarrhea here and there but mostly it is just 2-3 stools loose stools per day) but also saying his stomach is really bothering him. Had blood work and Calprotectin and everything came back really normal (Calprotectin slightly elevated to 77). Ugh, so I’m not sure what to do. Should we consider starting Uceris despite the normal labs? We did restart nightly enemas but things have stayed the same.
Thought maybe I could switch back to VSL#3DS and see if that helps but can’t find it anywhere.

Can you get the over the counter VSL? The only difference between the prescription and over the counter varieties is the dosages. Two over the counters equals one VSL DS #3 (that is double-strength).

Which version of VSL#3 are you referring to?

And are you sure it's doing any good? It's rather pricey, isn't it, for something that is of questionable benefit and that has a complex legal history (to put it nicely).

My dad used VSL#3 when he had gastroenteritis too (might have been campylobacter??) and went from diarrhea to solid BM in 24 hours. I am also not sure how much the probiotics influence colitis but scared to stop and feel they offer a level of protection against gastrointestinal infections...

Happy to report my son seems to be pulling out of the flare--nightly Rowasa and more limited diet seem to be the trick. I don’t have the VLS delivered yet, continuing to use the visbiome but 1/2 as much as before just in case it was an aggravating factor. Fingers crossed.
