FDA Issues Warning about Xeljanz

Just saw this in a newsletter from the FDA:

FDA has approved new warnings about an increased risk of blood clots and of death with the 10 mg twice daily dose of Xeljanz, Xeljanz XR (tofacitinib), which is used in patients with ulcerative colitis. In addition, the approved use of tofacitinib for ulcerative colitis will be limited to certain patients who are not treated effectively or who experience severe side effects with certain other medicines. We approved these changes, including adding our most prominent Boxed Warning, after reviewing interim data from an ongoing safety clinical trial of tofacitinib in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that examined a lower and this higher dose of the medicine.

Interesting reading but sometimes we are stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.
The lower dose did not work for me and the 10 mg is working great so what does one do.
On the dose Im on now its almost like I don't have UC.

"ongoing clinical trial"...

In other words, they tested it on the patient market and gathered data about what happened.

The FDA does not require longitudinal studies anymore. Everything gets rushed to market once basic safety is established.

Imagine getting treated for UC and suddenly you have a stroke due to a blood clot. Would it seem worth it then?

Sometimes I have to give my head a shake. They could do so much better but they just won't.
