I have proctitis and take generic mesalamine suppositories at night. I wean from them when my symptoms subside. I had what seemed like a minor flare in the summer and started the suppositories again. Was getting name brand Canasa but now due to the high price, I get the generic. It’s only $10
Ever since I got on the generic I’ve been feeling “off”. My proctitis got better right away but I’m super fatigued. For the last few days I’ve had more gas than normal and stomach cramps to the right and left of my stomach. They were mild cramps. Today I had pretty profuse amounts of diarrhea. I have never gotten diarrhea with the proctitis-just rectal pain and passing blood and mucous. Yesterday I was super constipated and passed a very firm, bulky stool. I was surprised when I got diarrhea today. Could I be having side effects from the Canasa suppositories or does this sound like my colitis has finally spread? The fatigue and joint pain I’ve been having feels like I have the flu but I don’t.

Sounds like a flare to me. Keep after it and give it more time to heal.

If you suspect it spread, try the mesalamine enema.

You are flaring, and not on enough medication for full coverage.
When are you due for an appointment with your GI? And a c-scope?
I suggest you get on an mesalamine oral plus the enemas....stay the course of treatment and taper to maintenance longer than using and stopping.

My flares started this way: constipation and then out of the blue diarrhea.
I would start to take maximal dosage of oral 5ASA + maximal dosage 5ASA enemas.
Then after colonoscopy GI will adjust your medications (for example to suppositories if you have only proctitis)

Thanks for the replies. My gastro doc is booked up until November. I made an appt next Friday with his PA. I’ve sent a message through the patient portal asking for them to schedule a colonoscopy for me. Since I’m an established patient of his practice with documented proctitis, I’m hoping I can get the colonoscopy next week or the week after.

You can call and request more meds....at the very least the enemas.
Hope the scope can be done soon... please update us on that.

I was sick for the whole week I took mesavant, and no reaction with pentasa.

For what it's worth, I had an immediate explosive reaction to Canasa suppositories that stopped as soon (one week) as I got off them.
Hang in there!

Garyi, interesting that you had issues with the Canasa. I couldn’t handle the generic Rowasa years ago when I was put on that. I had to buy the name brand.
I don’t know what the heck I have. I’m bringing in a stool sample tomorrow and my colonoscopy is scheduled for November 15th. Hopefully I get answers soon.

For me, real Rowasa seems to help a lot. My GI insists on it.
The results of your fecal test should be telling. Here is some good c diff data:
