Hi. I’m brand new to this forum. Thanks for this discussion even though for you veterans it may be repetitious. I’ve always felt that my diet effects the length of remissions between flares and secretly hoped there was a dietary solution to this illness. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a PBD after watching the movie, “Forks Over Knives” on Netflix. These MDs seemed more focused on decreasing heart disease and diabetes than UC, but the glowing testimonials were enticing. Also, I have heart disease in my family. My gut is in remission from UC right now so I can tolerate more fiber. However, I’m having trouble introducing the vegetable proteins back into my diet. Beans, peas, soy, etc. not working so well as staples for protein. Consistent gas, bloating, and that hard-to-describe instability I feel right before a flare.
What I found fascinating about this discussion was that some people seem to feel better, with less symptoms while eating poultry, red meat, etc.! This was helpful for me because I have found the same thing. I often joke that my gut seems to stabilize when I’m eating “bad” (my judgment) like a burger, pizza, tri-tip sandwiches, fast-food, candy, etc. It’s always puzzling to me. I’m NOT advocating eating fast food or bags of candy, but this discussion made me rethink my plan to cut out all animal protein. I seem to do better with flesh/fish protein in my diet. Doesn’t mean I can’t add more veggies, fruits, nuts, etc. and decrease the fried foods, sugar, and Diet Coke.
It’s a great help for me to hear everyone’s real-life experience with their diets and about new research. It reminds me to keep exploring and pay closer attention to what works for me. Went out to get chicken and eggs tonight 🙂.
The increased gas and bloating are also normal initial symptoms of going vegan. Even healthy people have this happen to them. It usually passes in a few weeks. Just FYI. I went vegan after watching Forks Over Knives 8 years ago.
