Stopped meds = felt better ?

So i decided to stop my medications for a few days and i havent had diarhea or abdominal pain or cramps or tenesmus. So now im starting to believe that maybe the medications and pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick so they can benefit from us buying more meds?
Has anyone stopped their meds and felt better afterwards ?

My meds are asacol mesalamine 4800 mg
Imuran azathioprine 150 mg
Mesalamine suppositories
Nexium
Vitamine b complex

I did that once with 6-mp and felt great, 4 months later I was in the hospital for 21 days and on cyclosporine. I even met with a surgeon while I was there. I left the hospital on 6-mp and cyclosporine for another 6 months.

I probably would have been fine if I didn’t stop the 6-mp. I hated the stuff, I could never sleep while I was on it.

I don't think pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick. Make a lot of money, yes, but so would most people given the opportunity

The was a lot of money to be made curing Hep-C. If they could cure IBDs they would. They have definitely improved our lives with biologicals.

I was also reading about xeljanz (not a biologic but still expensive).apparently it took 16 years to develop!

the likelihood is that at some point you will need to treat your UC with "something" - I don't think big pharma is making anyone sick intentionally - whether or not you need their meds will probably become clear in your future - hopefully you'll continue to feel well and put UC in the past - but please do have a plan if things start heading down the wrong path - playing catch up can sometimes be a real bugger -

I haven't used any meds in a while - my treatment is diet/lifestyle - fortunately, it's working well and don't see any reason for change -

I don't think Big Pharma is trying to keep us sick because if another Big Pharma came up with a cure or better RX the first BP would be outta business.

Why did you feel better after quitting your RX? One possibility is that you have some intolerance of the RX. But most people feel better taking the RX than not taking it. If you feel better not taking it you have the risk of inflammation becoming worse and your UC getting worse. Maybe you should ask what other RX meds can replace what you were taking. I quit a couple RX a few years ago because I did feel worse and my GI gave me an alternative that I still take many years later. I actually feel worse if I forget to take it which makes me remember woops I forgot it.

There's a chance that it is just a coincidence, as we have good and bad days at random. It's possible you have an allergic reaction to one of your meds. Stopping all of them does not tell you which of those meds is actually causing the problem. I would recommend reintroducing them one at-a-time and seeing if you can figure out which it is. Having a reaction to one medication means you need to switch from one med to another, it happens sometimes as everyone is different.

about 5% of people have to discontinue mesalamines due to an allergic reaction, described as a dramatic worsening of our UC symptoms. That can be an allergy to the mesalamine itself, or to the sulfite used as preservative in some of them (like the mesalamine enemas).

No, there is no grand-conspiracy that pills are designed to make us sick lol. Pharmaceuticals are a business and do make money from selling their product, as all businesses do. They are not inherently-evil or anything.

I don't think they try to keep us sick necessarily (that is to be determined) but they may be fully aware of safer more effective remedies that they can't patent and sell for thousands of dollars so they attempt to mimic them so they can profit and take credit while scaring people away from them because natural safe effective affordable remedies with no side effects are a huge threat to the industry? Just a guess.

You did not mention which meds, so you post is of little value and had great disruptive/conspiracy potential. You don't even consider that you got relief form a minor side effect of the meds and because you were not flaring you felt better. You do not consider coincidence, especially when experimenting with med reduction/withdrawing is only likely to occur when not really flaring.

If it was mesalamine, it can cause D - says so right on the list of side effects. How can this be? Because it is not an anti-D medication. It is an anti-inflammatory directly, and thus indirectly an anti-cancer med.Once the inflammation is gone (or very low) the "symptom" D form the med could be more than any from the residual medication. The question becomes how much insurance against cancer do you want?

The huge leap you make to a organized conspiracy theory is really laughable, except that such speculation can do so much harm.

Did you have "diarhea or abdominal pain or cramps or tenesmus" before you stopped the meds? If not, then you were in remission from the meds and will likely remain there until UC becomes active again and at that time the meds you had been on may no longer work for you.

How were you feeling bad when you were on the meds?

I stopped my mesalamine meds (with doctor's permission) and had the best 2 months of health I've ever had. Then I fell into a severe flare which I am now 15 months into and I've ran through every medication and need to have a colectomy.

I don't really consider myself a conspiracy theorist but it's common knowledge the pharmaceutical industry is a billion dollar industry. Humira alone made over $20 billion in one year. So if we think they don't have power and influence over the FDA, advertising, the medical community and training etc. we are being naive. So no I don't trust it completely. They are constantly sued and can easily afford it. @Hoda is asking a reasonable question.

I don't encourage people to stop their meds. Definitely have a backup plan if you do. This isn't an illness we can just ignore. I feel confident in Qing Dai because I was very sick when I took it and it was the only thing that put me into remission. What works for one person may not work for someone else. But what's great about this forum is we can openly share what has worked for us and it could benefit others.

I have been there several times. I stopped my meds because I was afraid of side effects. Then I had wonderful 1-4 months period of superior health. I felt invincible. I felt I could make it without meds. After this wonderful period UC stroke back again. Even harder than before. Always, no exception. There is minority of people who can make ti without meds. My GI told me that only two people were able to make it without meds during his carrier. He is now retired.

Do not waste time on conspiracy theories. Yes, there is a corruption in healthcare industry like in every other industry. If you look in history we live in golden age. Nowadays we have the best health care ever. Pharmaceutical companies compete to develop new drugs that are more effective and more safe. If they succeed they earn lot of money selling this new drug. Yes, it is big money game. If they want more money they have to come out with something better than others. Claim "pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick" does not make sense for me.
