Had colonoscopy today-what does this mean?

Just got back. This is my second colonoscopy. Last one 8 years ago showed idiopathic proctitis. After a promethease genetic bloodtest it was determined it was likely a variant of ulcerative colitis.

Today’s colonoscopy was with a different practice and doctor. There were no polyps, no inflammation, no proctitis. It was noted that there were “segmental abnormal vascularity in the cecum, ascending colon and proximal transverse colon. Localized abnormal vascularity was noted in mid rectum and distal rectum.

Doctor said he didn’t see evidence of IBD but of course final determination is through the biopsies. about the abnormal vascularity: he said he wouldn’t have even taken biopsies except I’ve had recent symptoms a month or so ago.

I realize nobody here is a doctor but you all are very experienced patients and I’d like to know your thoughts please.

His recommendation is another colonoscopy in 5 years but if the biopsies come back ok than 10 years.

"abnormal vascularity" That sounds like a chronic architectural change to your intestine, which is an IBD thing to the best of my knowledge.

Essentially what they are talking about is this. If you look inside your mouth or throat you can see small blood vessels that are visible through the thin, semi-transparent tissue. Those blood vessels appear in regular intervals in a predictable pattern. Non-IBD-people, look exactly the same within their colonoscopy. IBDers on the other hand have a very chaotic and unpredictable pattern of those blood vessels, the "Abnormal Vascularity" that your report references. Why? Repeat patterns of inflammation and healing jumbles it all up into a mess. Inflammation inflates the tissue, and healing deflates it, do that enough times and blood vessels are irregular in appearance, have weird branching, etc.

if pathology confirms you are in remission, then other sources of your GI symptoms will need to be sought.

I will consider myself lucky then because if I have pancolitis I’m not having any symptoms-no diarrhea, no mucous, no blood and no urgency. Maybe this is the very beginning of it all and I can get on some good meds to keep it from getting bad.

I really wish I had an upper endoscopy done too. I’ve never had one. At the very least, for the fact that I experience reflux. I’m sure I’ll be talking to my GI doc more about those symptoms more if we can’t nail down a definitive diagnosis.
