short course of Pred? anyone do that for a mild flare

Been in this stubborn mild flare for 4 months and trying to shake it. Hardly any bleeding on this one, but other symptoms that go along with a flare. Actually i have never been in a mild flare like this for so long with very little bleeding but i know there is inflammation down low. i have a bunch of pred from a couple years ago, was thinking about doing a short course to jolt me back into remission. anyone do this?..like a two-three week course or less. ive been on four lialda a day and Canasa at night.

I would not recommend self medicating with pred. Generally, it takes 2-months on pred to get yourself back into a remission, anything shorter is generally a waste of time, and only a temporary (not lasting) reprieve of that flare.

Hi ok thanks. ya i don't really want to but thought maybe it would jolt me back into remission. ya last time i took pred was 4 pills for two weeks 3 for two, tapering down..last flare i had 3 years ago i pulled out with mesalamine and was hoping this would be the same, sometimes just feel like throwing in the towel.

If you think the inflammation is low and you've been using canasa, I think a good potential solution would be enemas. I would try both mesalamine and steroids and see if you have luck. Perhaps you can avoid prednisone.

Retention enemas is what I would suggest as well....both mesalamine and steroid.

Definitely pred enemas which is a steroid based enema and one I use all the time to tackle any mild lower inflammation and it works wonders. It’s steroid based, but it only reaches the infected areas through the rectum, so it doesn’t go into the blood stream like tablet versions, so it’s nowhere near as toxic. So steroid enemas all the way to tackle lower side inflammation

prednisone = really bad idea

I would suggest mesalamine enemas as well.

thanks everyone for the help...i didn't really know about steroid enemas, well i sorta did, Uceris is it?? Just the Mesalamine ones. Would much rather go that route straight to the source then the tablets.

There are Uceris foam enemas and hydrocortisone enemas (liquid). Uceris is also a tablet. It's a steroid, but it's delivered directly to the colon. That might be another option for you to try before prednisone. I would suggest trying any of these before going on prednisone.

The standard steroid enemas are cheap with insurance i believe. Uceris is name-brand, less effective, and more expensive, but it's still a decent option. There are also foam cortenemas, but those tend to be expensive, or a higher copay vs the liquid steroid enemas - still likely cheaper than Uceris and perhaps more effective! Any could be a good option for you, and also request meslsamine enemas or Rowasa.

I have been flaring mildly for the past few months as well. The masalamine pills have been helping some. What has really helped me is calcium pills and above all, pepto bismol! Go figure! Went from diarrhea to formed stools in 2 days. I was shocked.
Give it a try, I take a about 3 or 4 sips a day.
