Check this out from last night.  Of course most likely this will not be THE magic bullet but it does show how quickly research is progressing. I hope this coronavirus turns out to be similar to SARS, MERS and Swine Flu which came and went quickly.

Yes, they are talking about hydroxychloroquine right now on Fox Business Network. Early indications VERY positive. They used this extensively in South Korea.

I had heard this talked about briefly on another network recently. Here's a scholarly article about it since Fox is usually a questionable source of info. Sounds promising, but early days.

Btw ... Swine flu is a type of influenza and is still around. Just that less people are getting it now and I believe that strain is now included in seasonal flu shots

Covid 19, and the others you mentioned are Corona viruses. MERS & SARS were not as easily transmitted as what Covid 19 apparently is. I hope you are right and that it will quickly die out, but please don't engage in magical thinking and not take this seriously. I don't remember the world wide infections with MERS & SARS like we have with Covid 19.

The standard seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against swine flu, but you may request the swine flu vaccine as well.

iam ...swine flu is H1N1 and that IS included in this year's flu shot. I did find articles from a few years ago when it wasn't included. Could you share where you found that it isn't included?

I am not picking on you lol ... I just want to make sure I have my facts correct

FYI... A(H1N1) was definitely in the fall 2019 flu shot.

That link was from 2009 so most likely it's included in current flu shots in the UK

Read the 3/19 interview with epidemiologist Larry Brilliant on Wired. He's the guy who helped eradicate the smallpox pathogen, still active at age 75 & assessing the U.S. response to COVID-19. / Old Hat (39 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Governor of NY said today that they are starting clinical trials in NYC using a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for a treatment

There are no US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs specifically for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. Right now our best hope is to develop a vaccine against COVID-19 which may take at least a year or more.

But President Trump's tweets put pressure to accelerate the start of public trials of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. Just minutes after Trump's tweets, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, an oncologist, clarified that the drug would be available “in the setting of a clinical trial — a large, pragmatic clinical trial — to actually gather that information and answer the question that needs to be answered and — asked and answered.”

And last Sunday New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that a study of the drug will start Tuesday (that means today). These drugs have already been cleared by the FDA for use against other diseases; they’re prescribed by doctors not just for malaria but also rheumatoid arthritis and lupus and have known safety profiles.

I don't know if the clinical trials for these drugs would have started so quickly without Trump's tweets.

Trials for Hydroxychloroquine are happening in many countries now, France, Australia, and of course New York, to name but a few. The WHO is itself coordinating a huge trial.

One would hope that a clear picture emerges quickly.

The tough question is going to be "When do we get people back to work?" Presumably when the number of cases seems manageable. But we don't have the test capability to know what are the number of cases. E.g. Los Angeles County is specifically instructing health providers to NOT test people who merely exhibit symptoms of COVID-19. They want the limited tests saved for decisions regarding people who require hospitalization. It makes sense that the priority is for hospital staff to know for sure which patients are infected.

But nobody knows how many mild or asymptomatic cases exist. Hard to make a good decision about loosening restrictions when you don't have data on the magnitude of the problem, or how fast it's growing, or what is the real mortality rate.

Seems to me we have to get test availability first. Can't steer the car if you're blind.

People getting tested in this pandemic are the sickest, they are not a representative sample of everyone infected with Covid.

One good thing is because of the Internet and software that facilitates cooperative work online, many people are working from home. This may be what saves us from complete disaster. Still though, people in many service jobs like in restaurants, entertainment, bars, sports, etc., are getting laid off in high numbers.

I'm lucky, my business is doing well, and my wife and 2 sons are both working and going to school full time (now all online instead of classroom) . Not everyone is so lucky, and I feel really bad for them.

I had to remove several posts for getting political. This article by 2 Stanford doctors seems to make sense right now given that we really don’t know how many people are infected, just those tested.

As for drug trials, I’m all for expediting any trials so we can find a treatment that works against this horrible virus.
