Canker sore very slow to heal

I have had a canker sore on my gum for about a month now. It hurts less than it did and it is less red around the edges and less white in the center. But the size has not changed. It is less than 1 mm.

My endodontist, dentist and a teledentist have all seen it. They all say it is a canker sore. The dentist indicated that people with UC have higher incidents of mouth sores and slower healing rates.

1. is this true?
2. has this happened to anyone else?
3. could it be another type of mouth sore that people with UC get?

I can't get in to see my GI or dentist until our lockdown is over next month. Any insight would be appreciated.

I used to have a big problem with canker sores but for some reason I haven’t for a long time now. (Maybe entyvio ulcers in the mouth as well as the gut?). Anyway when/if I do get one now I find it heals faster if I put chapstick on it. Puts a coating over the sore so it helps it heal or at least not hurt as bad. I dab the sore with a Kleenex first to dry it off and then the chapstick will adhere to it. Helps a little anyway. But I do sympathize— those things hurt and I also get a headache and just feel crummy with it.

Are you using a mouth rinse? Peroxyl or orajel can speed healing.

For a year after a flare up I suffered from canker sores myself. Two things worked for me: cortifluoral (not sure it is available in the US but you might find something similar) and propolis tincture. I am generally quite sceptical about natural remedies but I had to eat up my words when I tried it. Best of luck, these little b**tards can be so darn painful.

My dentist who looked at the pictures I sent wants me on Keflex for this, since the sore is over a root canal tooth. I haven't taken an antibiotic in 10 years and I am scared of what it will do to my (very quiet right now) UP.

I have an in person appointment with another dentist tomorrow. So I will wait for a second opinion before taking the Keflex.

Any strategies about taking an antibiotic while trying to deal with UP/UC? I am really scared. I use Culturelle once a day and a Canasa suppository about every other day and my life has been really manageable.

I used to get them quite often. Started using one drop of tea tree oil on my toothbrush along with my toothpaste. Rarely get them now. It’s a natural disinfectant. Worth a go. Maybe rinse with a drop in some water. Has to be diluted it’s quite strong. Another thing is grapefruit seed extract.

I used to get them a TON, even years before I developed UC. Awful things! For me, switching to a toothpaste that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate was the answer (Burt’s Bees is my current kind). I read that suggestion somewhere and figured it was worth a shot. After that change, I hardly ever got them anymore. It was like a night and day difference.

Yes, IBD patients are more prone to mouth ulcers. More commonly in Crohn's then UC. But can happen in UC as well

Did you have a biopsy taken from it?

Recently I had a painful ulcer on the side of my tongue that took 7 weeks to finally be gone. It seemed to come with maybe a mild virus in early Feb that caused pain in my jaw, headache, runny nose and a bit of a tickly cough (that lasted about a week). Ive never had anything like that before , and it never progressed into anything except that really painful ulcer. I had it checked at the one month mark and the ENT surgeon wasn't concerned...it slowly receded nicely over the next few weeks.
I used Orajel for mouth sores, increased L-Lysine and some vitamins, but it was a long haul. Plus, I then developed other ulcers on my gums (which I get once every few months since 1976). Doc said autoimmune.
Sigh.

The stress of this world crisis is getting to me for sure.

I get them in cycles..I`d get one and another right after but I`ve had then since I was a kid. . They would sometimes last for a few weeks... I`d have a few days of agony and then the pain would go (when eating) but the sore would remain for some time after.

I like ambesol gel or generic....(spelling may be wrong) ..I used it many times a day..and it helped the pain
