Hey Guys,

I hope all is well, it would be good to know it anyone has tried a Coconut Oil Enema?

According to the The American Journal of Gastroenterology (October, 2018), a women was due to have hers removed and started using coconut oil enema's to great success and is cured now (well back to normal at least and drug free).

Be good to get your thoughts on this.

I made my own suppositories with coconut oil quite a while back. It didn't seem to make a significant difference.

Coconut oil has been mentioned off and on over the years here, as something that could possibly help (a quick forum search pulls up many hits). Lots of inquiries not many followups. Just about anything that can be made into an enema has been tried, from aloe enemas to any variety of things. Try it, if you are so inclined, and report back. However, I would not bet the farm on it working for you. There's lots of inspirational one-off case reports but sadly they are not broadly repeatable among individuals.

I hate to be negative, but an enema doesn't even treat the entire colon, so this would be useless for anyone with involvement beyond than the anus/rectum. Maybe she was going to have surgery for proctitis, and it helped that, but it seems like wishful thinking. Interesting how they say Colitis in the title but Crohn's in the article, they can't even get the diseases straight. Then it mentioned diversion colitis, why was she diverted?

That website looks less than reputable. Lots of links to buy coconut oil.

Whilst the website looks very dodgy there is an article in the journal which seems reputable, I had my doubts on this one too.

One thing I do know about coconut oil is that it's a very good anti bacterial and anti fungal thus for those with the left hand colon inflammation there could be a case.

I'll probably have to try it and get back to you all.

My colitis has been under control but in the last few months I've developed a very bad wind issue (wet flatulence), which I have never had before. Thus I'm trying to figure out what I need to do.

Deen, tell us a bit more about your current treatment. What medications and/or alternatives are you currently taking to treat your UC?

Has anything else changed lately? Skipped your treatment, more stress in your life, etc etc. Anything you can correlate to the worsened symptoms?

Hi iPoop,

A couple of things changed;

1. After being unable to work for over a year due to UC I got a job in Mar 18. Sadly the company got acquired and has been very stressful since multiple people leaving or being made redundant.

2. I started pushing weights in the gym and for once in my life I gained mass and muscle.

3. I eat more red meat daily, eggs and vegan protein (milk, fish and chicken allergy from birth)

4. I used to have a load of natural anti inflammatories but couldn't sustain this due to work and baby.

Currently; (daily)

- Mezalizine 2.4g
- Ldn - 5ml
- 2 enzymedica digest gold tablets and 2 lyndons daily Digestive enzyme before each meal.
- vitamin b12, d3, k2, selenium, organic calcium, magnesium
- vegan protein powder, L-glutamine, bcca and morninga powder.

All in my morning smoothie.

I stopped probiotics and prebiotic, noticed an improvement straight away.

The article is crap. The journal article cited is about the treatment of her diversion colitis. This has been treated with short-chain fatty acids in other patients.

So, 1) she had some sort of CD related surgery to result in the "diversion" colitis. 2) she was a CD patient, and 3) they only claimed it treated the diversion colitis. She still has CD and is presumably taking meds for that.

Cant see it has much value for UC. Maybe for someone with pouchitis.

Deen, have you considered going from your maintenance dosage of 2.4 grams to a flare dosage of 4.8 grams a day of Mezalizine? Have you considered reintroducing canasa suppository or a mesalamine/pentasa/salofalk enema?

Yeah, a lot of changes in your life, all of which could have been contributing factors.

For me, certain foods cause excess gas. When I was doing SCD, I almost never passed wind. Milk products are a huge culprit for me, but most complex carbs will do it to me too. Just thought I'd pass along my own experience. It might be worth trying an elimination diet and adding things back in slowly to sort things out.

Deen...You are flaring it seems, at least I would have those symptoms when flaring.
Retention enemas nightly....either steroid or mesalamine would be a perfect addition.

Coconut oil kills pathogens, mainly fungus.

Hi Guys,

Thank you all for the feedback, I think I am having a minor/mild flare as the bowel movements have been normal and thankfully there is no blood. Over the holidays I intend to increase the mesalazine enema's along with some of other things I did to bring me under control.

I suspect the stress of the couple of months has bought this on. But the good news is that its not a full blown flare as per last time. I'll probably experiment with a few things e.g. Coconut Oil Enema's.

Hey Deen any luck with the coconut oil enemas? I was thinking to try them - but i was also thinking to take it a step further and mix in turmeric in the enema. Turmeric mixes up well in warm coconut oil unlike water.
Also btw the article seems specific to diversion colitis which i had to look up what it was. So makes me think we may not have same level of success.
Lastly, i read someone had success eating shredded coconuts .. go figure

I did it once and found a huge amount coconut oil come out of me in the morning. At the time I was flaring so it made me worst. I did make a mental note of doing it again but unfortunately never got round to it due to work and stress. It is on my to do list

about 20% of. people diagnosed with UC will go into spontaneous remission, particularly if you have a very mild case of the disease. If you have very mild inflammation, you may respond to many alternatives and some of it may be a placebo effect. Placebos get 20% remission rates in many of the mesalamine RCTs .

Deen, "Wet flatulence" = "shart", in language common to this forum when I joined back in 2007. It stands for mucus & stool coming out unexpectedly when one needs to expel gas. Sharts are usually early signs of a UC flare. I agree with Quincy that you had best remedy that with retention enemas. Those can get worse/more frequent & then lead to discharge of blood, besides. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking Colazal)

I noticed lowering the amount of fat in my diet and increasing fibre (via phylliem husk...I cant spell it) helped reduce the amount of wet farts (Sharts) I was having. This lasted almost 2 years, I changed job 2019 april then got a nasty bully of a new boss in May 2020 combined with covid economy crash (i work in sales) resulting in a load of stress causing me to flare on and off for the last 6 months. I flared 3-4 times but managed to stop bleeding within 2 weeks through good old cabbage juice, messazaline enemas and trying not get stressed.

Nearly every UC patient i have met in my life has had stress as the most frequent trigger.

I’m hooked on the Metamucil fiber thin bars, I have a package before lunch, great with coffee, this helps me eliminate the next morning. Drink tons of water, it helps so much for the bulk.
