I suspect that the cognitive issues are due to the chronic stress of living with an unpredictable illness and long-term inflammation (even though they were in remission at the time). UC does cause a lot of stress, which affects HPA axis and has lots of implications for mood/cognition.
The mini mental status exam is a very crude and unhelpful test for measuring cognition. It's used as a quick screening tool for suspected dementia that takes only 10 minutes, but is not very useful beyond a quick screening tool in primary care settings.
I don't know if these results are meaningful given limitation of MMSE and very small sample size.
