Non sexual causes for proctitis

I am a 75 year old married heterosexual man, and I was diagnosed with acute proctitis. Non of the typical causes such as STD , anal sex and anal insertion of any kind are applicable to me. All I could think of was having eaten oysters prior to the onset. Both of my exits were non functional and I went to the emergency room with fever, urine retention etc. When talking to the urologist and internist at the hospital, they appeared to be skeptical about my oyster story. Has anybody had similar experiences ?

I'm sure lots of possible things can cause infections like that. You'll probably never know. For now, don't worry and just focus on healing and feeling better.

I agree with ipoop.

There are likely hundreds of etiologies for proctitis and ulcerative colitis and most don't have to do with sexual activity. Some of the etiologies reported in research include genetics, viruses, food poisoning, LT antibiotic use, sanitation in western countries... to name a few. A family member got proctitis after accutane for acne. These are guesses and nobody really knows. It's common to get IBD either as a young adult or older adult (65+). I got UC after LT antibiotic use as a teen, but i'll never know. Oysters are unlikely to be a cause unless you got exposure to pathogens from something you ate, like salmonella and e-coli. You can do a stool test to check for pathogens, but unlikely to yield.

Many times for younger people UC goes into extended remissions. In my case, after dx at about 24 years old, I've had remissions of 18, 9 and about 20 years. My UC fired up several years ago, only as a result of pelvic radiation.

No one knows with any certainty what causes or cures this disease. There are some good clues on what may cause an exacerbation. As the saying goes, " No known cause, no known cure, only hope."

UC is caused by proteobacteria overgrowth in most cases.

UC is an autoimmund disease and triggered when and however.

You dont say you have UC...did you have biopsies done? If so, do you have a copy of the pathology report?

Doubtful its the oysters. What other health isues do you have?

TBH, this is the first time in the last 14 years I noticed anyone connecting UC to sexual activity.

I would rather ask, do you have any other autoimmune conditions, esp. Lupus or Rheumatoid arthritis? If not, I would stay on top of my health.

I would not use word 'cause'. The overgrowth of many bugs is observed in UC subjects but AFAIK, none are labeled as the cause. The overgrowth is strongly associated with symptoms worsening.

gary, how did you have a remission of 20 years. That is rare. What were you on?

Asacol...by several changing brand names. Usually 2.4 gm/day. Nothing else.

Did you have a colonoscopy to confirm it? How did the biopsy report turn out? My understanding is that "microscopic inflammation" is usually still there even in remission and can be seen with the biopsy and pathology report. For example, in my case no gross inflammation was seen during the colonoscopy until the sigmoid colon but there was still microscopic inflammation throughout the descending colon found in the biopsy and pathology report.

Curious to know if you had similar?

More than I care to count....and they were back before flexible fiber-optics. The name silver shaft was quite accurate.
