Hi,

NYC is allowing signups starting Feb. 15 for people that take immunosuppressants (I take Xeljanz). The New York site lets you choose locations that either have Moderna or Pfizer. Has anyone taken the Moderna? I am leaning towards that now but if folks had first hand experience to share that would be great.

I've read the C&C foundation FAQ but it didn't go into too much detail. NYU Langone IBD Center sent an email recently which mentioned a lack of data w/ vaccinations but still recommends it:

Q: What if I am on an immune-suppressing medication?
A: For our patients on immune-suppressing medications such as azathioprine (Imuran), 6-MP (mercaptopurine), infliximab (Remicade, Renflexis, Inflectra), adalimumab (Humira), golimumab (Simponi), certolizumab (Cimzia), vedolizumab (Entyvio), ustekinumab (Stelara), tofacitinib (Xeljanz), it is important to know that the vaccine trials did not include patients on immune-suppressing medications. It is unknown if the vaccine response will be as strong in patients who are on immune-suppressing medications. However, the vaccine is believed to be very safe and we believe the benefits of receiving the vaccine outweigh any potential risks.

If I had the luxury to choose which vaccine, I would research which ones work best against the new variants, especially the south African and Brazilian strains.
Don't think there's much difference between pfizer and moderna re being on immunosuppressants. They use the same technology.

My 78-year-old mother got her second shot of Moderna last Thursday. She tolerated it well, just arm soreness, a bit of overall soreness and fatigue. It and the Pfizer vaccines seem to be pretty similar, but I believe I read that the Moderna vaccine contains more of the antibody agent.

I just got my first Moderna and from the people I know it is the easier one to tolerate . I heard more reactions from Pfizer . I had headache but that’s it/

From what I have seen most of the NY state run clinics had moderna. I have an appointment in early March since I also teach at a SUNY school and fully expect to get a moderna vaccine. Most of the folks I know who have received the Pfizer vaccine have been health care workers at large hospitals.

I got the Moderna 1/20. First day nothing. Second day a little sore all over but not bad at all. Been fine since. I THINK....if you trust our government...USA...any vaccine they allow would be better than actually getting the virus. My sister in law got it. In her 50s, now has blood clots in lungs, needs O2, is losing lots of blood from colon, due to blood thinners for lungs. She has been given two units of blood to get her through the weekend....we live in the sticks and doctors don't do colonoscopies on weekends....has been in hospital for the past two weeks. Get a shot!!!

I got the moderna because that’s what was available. I had a very sore arm and then 24 hrs after the shot got chills and slight fever that Tylenol took care of. Going for #2 moderna on Friday.

I read early on that Pfizer had a slightly higher percentage of efficacy over moderna. I read today that both Pfizer and moderna work well against the UK strain but the moderna not as well against the south Africa strain.

My D-i-L got the Pfizer. Had a slight reaction to the 1st shot and none at all from the 2nd.

I just received the Pfizer shot yesterday. I am on Humira. I have a sore arm like I do when I receive the flu shot. Otherwise no issues. I have read about both and they are almost identical.

Just had 2nd Pfizer vaccine this week. No reaction to either except a slight sore arm that was gone within a day and a tiny headache on 2nd shot that was gone the next day.

I have read that they are both very much the same. IMO...any shot is better than no shot.

This stuff is so confusing to me. Is it made the same way as the other two? There must be something different about it.

No, pfizer and moderna use mRNA technology, this uses an adenovirus vector. it's more similar to the astra zenica vaccine in terms of how it works.

The 66% efficacy is based on a single dose and refers to preventing symptoms. It's apparently 85% effective against severe disease and 100% against hospitalisation and death (within the time frame of the trial. There's an ongoing trial to see if a 2nd dose will boost efficacy.

I think it means in a community. The trials usually compare the number of sick people in placebo group versus in the vaccine group.

The vaccine has been developed and produced by Janssen, a Belgian company and subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Janssen does have experience with vaccines, including recently they developed an ebola vaccine. Happen to know about this because I live quite near their production site and an ex works for them

I just had my 1st dose of Pfizer this AM. Will post if any reaction. 2nd dose scheduled for 3/7.

The nurse said that being on immune suppressant meds (Remicade) could affect whether the vaccine will work for me and asked if I still wanted it. I said even if it's only a little protection that's better than no protection. It would really suck if the vaccine doesn't work because of Remicade sad

Had my 2nd shot of moderna Friday at 11 am. Woke up at 3 am with severe chills. I won’t lie —yesterday was really rough. Tylenol would take down the fever but once it wore off it would come back. Last evening was the worst — fever got over 102. Again Tylenol kicked it out. Also had a headache and body aches. Woke up at 3 am this morning and could tell it was finished. So it lasted 24 hrs. My friend who got her 2nd same time as me also woke up at 3 am but with body aches. Oh and the shot immediately hurt this time and stung for about an hour.

Still — very worth it. And if my reaction is anything like having covid I definitely don’t want it!

Thanks for heads up RE Janssen, Poopydoop! *** RE Pfizer vaccine for seniors: longtime friend of mine in PA (no IBD, but autumn recurrence of breast cancer & 3rd lumpectomy, plus has 2 knee replacements) got her 2nd Pfizer shot on Sat around noon, and reports no side effects thus far except for waking today with a slightly fatigued feeling. I find that especially interesting in light of reports on Moderna #2 shots; Dr. Fauci even said following his that it "wiped" him "out" for the 24 hours afterward. Phooey! / Old Hat
