Hello

I’m super concerned about my 24 yr old son. He is in med school and has terrible reflux. He takes Pepcid as omeprazole GIVES him diarrhea. Lately he’s been complaining of fatigue, inability to focus and increased acid and stomach discomfort . I found out that early December he had a few bms with blood and mucus (he doesn’t have hemorrhoids or fissure). He was afraid to tell me about it. He also has trouble sleeping . I want him to see a GI doc but he thinks it will all resolve itself. Having Crohns colitis myself .... I’m worried.my IBD started off slowly and I even had a normal scope at first. I was going to ask my GI to order a fecal calprotectin test as a start. Any thoughts??

I had warning signs-mucous, some diareah. I have often wondered what would have happened had I been diagnosed before things reached the raging point and I ended up in the hospital for a week. Having said that, I know it can be hard to get in for testing, and in my case, I probably would have still been waiting for an appointment by the time things blew up. If you can get him to do that test, I say that would be a really good idea. I am sorry he is having troubles-as a parent, I know it is tough.

That's how I started- popping antacids regularly. Didn't seem like much, and then-BOOM!

I am so sorry you're concerned about your son. I think a calprotectin is a reasonable place to start. It's noninvasive and it might give you some idea of what's going on... Hopefully, it shows no inflammation and it gives you some confidence that nothing's going on. The problem is that if you really think something's going on, you may not be satisfied without seeing something more viable, like a sig scope. What does he want to do? I guess at 24, he might lean one way or the other. He sounds like an impressive man regardless. I hope now that he's opened up to you, he feels better about doing so in the future. Let me know how it goes. Fingers crossed for no inflammation.

Thanks All for replying . Son was scoped up and down and there were signs of reflux and also internal hemorrhoids (probable cause of the temporary blood). There were no signs of IBD!

That was fast regarding scoping. I'm happy for the relief you and your son have from the non-IBD diagnosis. Hope the treatment plan is successful.
Good it wasnt left longer, because the stress of one's discomfort never seems to go away on its own regardless.

Yes it was really fast. He was scoped 1 week after his appointment. I’ve always gotten in quickly as well. He’s being treated for reflux for now. Thanks for the responses because the stress was making him worse!

The discomfort of reflux is extremely stressful.
I take it he was biopsied for h. Pylori as well and it was negative. What is he on for reflux?
Is he feeling any relief discomfort-wise?

He’s on protonix and they tested for hpylori. It takes 2 weeks to come back with results .
