I started migraines along with UC. I thought there was a connection and struggled to find a remedy for almost 8 years. Tried every triptan in the market, every other off-label medication, and no effects.
My mom with pancolitis also had migraines in her 30s and 40s. Every physician I went to told me, there is a difference between female and male migraines but could not tell me what. And this affects treatment strategy, esp when you tell them your mom also has/had them.
That being said, Triptans are the easiest abortive but that's not the solution. I prefer solutions, if available.
- Whether he uses glasses or not, get his eyesight tested. Check if he has myopia or hyperopia. Adjust the glasses accordingly. This is my solution, found by accident.
- If triptans don't work as an abortive, get an Rx for Relafen(Nabumetone). 1.5gm dose aborts my migraine, takes about 2 hours to subside. Ibuprofen does it quickly but can't use it due to gut side effects.
- If migraine accompanies with nausea, he can ask Rx for Metoclopramide. 20mg takes the edge off nausea.
- Most likely, he is Magnesium deficient (the majority of the population is), he can supplement Magnesium supplement of his choice. I use Mag citrate 200mg 3X a day. It reduced my migraine throbbing significantly that I could work through migraines. Some folks don't tolerate citrate form, glycinate is fine too. Avoid oxide.
