I had my colon removed and I got arthritis instead. I was put on Azathioprine again. You're right when you say that only the site of the attack is removed but not your autoimmune disease. I've been suffering since j-pouch surgery but I'm also not OK with an ostomy.
Andreita, I'm sorry to hear that you have a different condition to deal with now, but I'm grateful that you've shared.
UC, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis run in my family, so I doubt that having my bowel removed would cure me of auto-immune disease, and that's one reason why I'm reluctant to go down the surgery route. I've always felt my bowel is the site of attack, but not the problem itself.
Having said that, I do feel encouraged when I hear success stories about
surgery, and recognise that some people (including in my family) had no choice but to have surgery. One day I'm probably going to have surgery, but I'll probably resist till I'm told I have no choice!
