Redness itself is not tooo bad... I've had scopes where my rectum was full of yellow ulcers...

Yes, spoke to doctor there so it’s left sided. The pathology from biopsies come back in ten days he says.

He’s started 40mg of pred for a while then to taper down.

40mg pred for a while Quincy, then probably go back to the enemas also. They seem focused on the steroid at the moment until the flare calms down. They seemed relatively confident the steroids would work then back onto rectal maintenance. He has to stay on the oral mesalamine also.

A good time to start the enemas would be when he's tapering. And it's an option he can also use steroid enemas during that period.

He is quite admirable taking it in stride at his young age. It helps his functioning that symptoms aren't horrible, but challenging in the way they don't match the actual inflammation. My original GI mentioned during one of our discussions that he was surprised when patients presented as such.
A good thing to keep in mind.

Please keep us updated on how he is doing during the pred.

Definitely Quincy his inflammation does not match his symptoms. He is lucky thus far with his symptoms but it’s a horrible illness. This place is a great help. Yourself especially.

The doctor seems very certain the pred will settle things?

He was up at the big hospital in Glasgow this time, to be fair the service and doctors are top class. I feel he’s in the right hands if that makes sense.

Totally makes sense. If you believe the doctors are giving you actual information instead of the glossed over patronising version to ease fears, then it's a good thing. How old is your son?

The pred should settle things. I'm curious what his symptoms will be when the doctor determines he is doing well and ready to taper.

He’s almost 12 now.

How long roughly will it take the pred to work ? Currently day 3

I dont know...i would think his symptoms would dictate that. Some improve a lot after a few weeks, others a few months. I've never been on it, but from what I read, there is no set time. Plus while tapering out of a bad flare, there can be many increases and decreases to get things more steady.

He isn't in a severe flare or in extreme discomfort, which is good. Doesn't seem it would be very long.

Imdo, however, suggest you put out a separate thread specifically about your son on prednisone. There are many who have experience and great knowledge to be able to answer your questions during this time.
