Thoughts on 2nd Covid vaccine causing huge flare?

I don't care how mad anyone gets at me for saying I am not convinced that the vaccines cause flares since we all have a disease where we can flare at any time. In 2017 I was in a solid remission on Entyvio (confirmed by colonoscopy) and then 2 months later I entered a long, bad flare that didn't get under control until 2019. Should I retroactively blame the vaccine? We all try to find something to blame when we flare. That's all I am saying. You don't know any better than anyone else what causes a flare. I know we all "know" our bodies ... until they betray us and we flare.

I don't want people to avoid the vaccines because they are worried they could flare. I don't remember much talk about gastro issues with the previous strains of Covid, but I have talked to a few who have recently been infected with Delta and they all say they got diarrhea (these are non-UC people). I shudder to think what that would do to us since we already have gastro issues.

I believe (and this is only my opinion!) that if the vaccines do cause flares we would be seeing more people on this site who are flaring and I just haven't seen any uptick in that. Looks to me like it's about the same number as usual here.

btw, Sara ... I am not sure why you specifically called me out on my beliefs. I am not the only one who has said similar things. And I never said you were a liar. I don't attack anyone personally. You express your beliefs. I express mine. Don't take it so personally ... it's not an attack on anyone.

If someone saying that stress, diet etc caused their flares and by saying that it could cause someone else to do something that could endanger their life or the lives of others I would say something. Since those things only affect them I just move along.

Covid is real. Covid is deadly. Younger people (even kids) are now being hospitalized with it in rising numbers. Virus's do not care about our opinions or politics. They just reproduce and mutate until they are stopped. I am not fear mongering or an alarmist running around saying the sky is falling. I am an observer. We are going to be in a world of hurt this fall/winter if we, as a society, don't get out act together. Unvaccinated people, vaccinated people who have low or no antibodies, even healthy people those who got the vaccines early this year are now having dwindling levels of antibodies ... this is all going to converge at the same time. Last year, there were lots of mitigation steps in place. Now very few places even require masks. This could get VERY ugly.

Unless it magically disappears. I believe in magic so want to be hopeful.

I just want to say that by sharing my experience, I am not encouraging anyone to not get the vaccine. I'm simply sharing my experience as anecdotal experience, so we can capture what's going on in our community amongst auto-immune sufferers. I was a champion of the shot and still think they are saving lives.

But in my case, having not one but two auto-immune diseases flare soon after my covid shots, if a third "booster" is required, I will be asking for a medical exemption. That's my choice, based on my experience, nothing more. Of course, I cannot prove the shots triggered me. Nor can anyone prove they didn't. But I had a flare after each shot (of different diseases). With those odds, I will not be getting a third.

I am having a bad flare up after the second moderna. The second dosis got me very sick with its normal dose effects but then I started a bad flare up. Coincidence?I will never know

I had 2 doses of Moderna. Extreme fatigue for one day following vaccination. No apparent effect on my UC.

I have another friend who lives in Florida. She has cancer and was supposed to go for some pre-op testing that had to be put on hold because the hospital is too overrun with Covid patients right now to take her

I have no doubt that what you are saying is true, OTOH maybe the link below is 'fake news'. If so it should be expunged from the internet. How can we all get on the same page if we cannot even get the facts straight. It shouldn't be hard to determine what the real situation is regarding this issue.

It’s a matter of picking your poison I’m afraid. Chance of a flare or chance of covid? And covid itself is a spin of the wheel — mild, moderate, or extreme case?

I feel that yes some people are flaring after vaccines but also that just as many are not.

I’m not into forcing or shaming people to get vaccines but I do wish the anti-maskers (not looking at anyone here btw) would suck it up and put on a mask if they don’t want a vaccine and quit spreading it around to those who are trying to be responsible for others well being.

*Anecdotal evidence alert*

There was a discussion between a couple of UC patients about flaring up following their 2nd covid jab today, while I was at clinic. Both felt that the 2nd jab triggered a flare. One of them had had just one flare in her life, then was in remission for 8 years till this 2nd flare. Both were upset and blamed the 2nd covid jab, so I asked the UC nurses if anecdotally they're seeing a trend. The answer was 'yes', but it looked like it was a subsection of patients - typically not on MABs, perhaps just on mesalazine, UC possibly rumbling along and not well controlled.

They were clear that 'you should still get vaccinated though'.

Please note that I'm just feeding back the anecdotal info that I heard today. Don't shoot the messenger. My intention is not to scare people but to respond to the OP's question.

I will point out for the sake of neutrality that people can flare for all sorts of reasons (I'd often flare after a viral chest infection). We'd need a statistician to look into whether there's any correlation between getting the 2nd jab and flaring, and if there was a correlation we'd then need to decide which was a greater risk for us.

Each of us has a different risk profile when it comes to Covid. Make your own choice based on your health and ignore the overzealous pro and anti vaxxers. It's not up to them to decide for you.

UCyousee that was also my intuition - that being on immunomodulators and having well-controlled UC makes having a flare less likely.

I would also add - make your own choice based on facts and scientific evidence.

Agreed. It's important to base your risk / reward decision about your health on the research that's available and not conspiracy theories.

That is sound advice, UCyousee. IBD is at best a catch all title for a whole range of different bowel issues (the same way in that, what was named TMJ Disorder in the 70s, now covers over 100 different jaw issues). Depending on the exact pathology of our individual presentation we will all react differently to both drugs, therapeutics and even vaccines. It is up to us with the help of our doctors to find what is right for our bodies and not have to have this forced on us by the pro and anti vaccers brigade.

(By the way how nice it is to have a week on HealingWell with none of that pro v anti vac bs? Well done to the mods.)

First of all, people, have your shots please!

Catching severe Covid-19 is the first thing we want to avoid.

On a personal note now, I was in remission for ~1.5 years under Entyvio and Salofalk. Both endoscopic and biochemical. Even if I was afraid of catching covid-19 I did have a scope both in 2020 and 2021.

Received the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in June and since then it all went downhill.

The first week after the second shot I had a minuscule bowel movement frequency increase.
Then the monthly blood panels started to slowly show ever increasing values for WBC, MONO, NEU, LYM, BASO, PLT, CRP etc, etc. Mind you the blood panels I had previously were normal.

Had a scope (second one in 2021) at month 2 after the 2nd shot because I now had blood... Flare.

For the first time in my multi-decade experience with UC, the prednisone doses I usually took during a flare, didn't do anything. So the dose has been maxed out and I am waiting for a new scope any day now (3rd in a row....) .


It's anecdotal, I know but it's my experience.

I would have the shots again but in the name of science and as a subject of an ongoing research on the matter, I believe these experiences should be heard and be respected.

Have your shots people but don't be afraid to talk.

Agreed. Similar thing happened to me but with 2nd Moderna.

I saw blood in my stool after second shot. I really don’t know if it’s related but that’s when I saw a return of blood. I’m still really glad I got vaccinated and would do so again even if I knew I would see blood again

Hi everyone, I am trying to figure out whether I should get vaccinated or not. All scientific info I am finding is that it is recommended but that people with IBD (or any other autoimmune condition) were not included in the original trials. Can anyone,please, post a link if they have read about such trials?

I'm in the minority. I'm probably still going to get a booster shot at some point and hope the same thing doesn't happen, lol. Pretty worried though. You'll probably be fine. I'm pretty jealous of your 4 year remission! That's awesome.

PA: just saw your lovely post attacking calling me a liar from August above. I flared from the vaccine. You didn't. Move on. My doctor disagrees with you, btw.

Telling me I didn't actually flare from the vaccine equals calling me a liar. I brought it up now because i just saw it, exactly as I said! His "opinion" on if I flared? Have you all ever heard of invalidation and gaslighting? I'll just block PA, no worries.

Sarah -- I never said you were a liar or that you didn't flare ... or even that the vaccine absolutely didn't cause your flare. I don't know why you insist on making my comments personal and twisting them into something ugly.

Please block me so you don't have to read any more of my thoughts or opinions since they seem to bother you so much.
