Humira causing Psoriasis

My daughter is taking Humira for Crohn's and it is helping her crohn's symptoms. For the last 8 months, she has been getting psoriasis, which is getting worse, and the GI and dermatologist told us that this is a side effect of Humira. Is there anything that can be done? I do not want to discontinue Humira as it appears to be helping with Crohn's.

I've had psoriasis on and off since childhood and the best treatment for me was straightforward sunshine. Has your daughter tried UV phototherapy?

The other thing that has worked for me in some situations is pimecrolimus (Elidel) which is more commonly used for eczema, but can be used to treat plaque psoriasis.

Possible it's a rare side effect. You could try switching to stelara or entyvio.

It's possible psoriasis is an extra-intestinal manifestation of IBD, and will remain an ongoing challenge even if she switches meds.

My brother who has UC like me, has psoriasis and never took anything other than Pentasa.
It may be unrelated as Ipoop said.

I wonder if it is from the Humira. I developed psoriasis after maybe 1.5 years on an Inflectra/Imuran combo, buuuuuut it runs in my family -- my dad, aunt, grandpa, brother. Psoriasis is actually the only autoimmune condition that runs on either side of my family and it didn't pop up until I was in UC-land. We switched the Imuran to methotrexate, which is used to treat psoriasis, and it went away.

I'd agree with you, Suchatravesty, that it could be hard to figure out if it's genetic predisposition or Humira that triggered the psoriasis, as it's not uncommon to have psoriasis and UC running in families. It's the same for my wider family and a teenager in the family has just joined the club, by developing psoriasis. The other one that runs in my family is ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
