I believe I've been taking the generic form of Asacol HD for a few years now ever since insurance (a few different types as I've switched jobs) stopped covering it. It's an expensive medication, around $800 for 90 tablets full price. I remember foolishly paying like $100 for two weeks worth of tablets because I had lost my job. It's negligble that this medication helps me honestly. There's times I simply didn't have a job and was without insurance, which meant a month without it.
It's the only UC medication I take aside from Rowasa enemas, sparingly which really helps whenever I feel inflammation coming on as my bigger problem is that I need to treat from below a lot more. Asacol doesn't reach well down there.
As someone who primarily prefers alternatives and supplements, these two medications are the most studied I believe, and the least harmful to the body. Don't quote me on that, but there's absolutely no side effects that I'm aware of for me, and I've been taking both 5-10 years now.
