re: people at high risk for Covid

Wow. That just made me want to cry.

I’m glad I had a good response to the vaccines but I still don’t feel safe without a mask. And I live in CA where apparently they’ve lifted the mask mandate. Maybe half the people out and about are still masking.

Supposed to meet with childhood friends for lunch next week and 2 of them refuse to get vaccinated. I’m torn whether to go or not and just so disappointed that so many people don’t want to try to eradicate this stupid virus by getting vaccinated. Thank god polio didn’t happen at this point in time. I think everyone would agree it was a good thing to eradicate that disease. What makes covid different? I don’t understand.

I have an unvaccinated friend. She does a self-test before we meet up.

I'm a high risk person and I 100% support the end to mandates and lockdowns. Too many other people have suffered because of them. The elderly have been locked in care homes without visitors, indefinitely. Children have had their development delayed. Depression, suicide, and drug overdose are at all time highs. Business are destroyed, people have lost their jobs in the millions, and society has been divided.

I'm at risk and willing to self-isolate so society can go back to normal. I am responsible for protecting myself. I don't expect society to stay on hold forever to keep me safe. I already self-isolated before covid showed up, any time it was cold and flu season. Covid is no different.

I respect that other people are scared, and if we want to talk about this on an individual level, I can totally understand where some of us are coming from. What I'm talking about here is public health policy. I am now against mandates, masks, all of it. They haven't stopped the pandemic. Omicron proved that the measures don't work. Everyone got sick anyway. It's time to end this madness before it destroys society. A virus with a 0.1% death rate that mostly affects people 55+ is not serious enough to warrant this "emergency". The at-risk should hide and protect themselves, everyone else should practice risk tolerance.

I am against trading so much freedom for safety. Safety is overrated. Life is dangerous and so is freedom. But without freedom, life isn't worth living.

Van -- how exactly are you high risk? You don't take meds. I don't think you are very old. Never heard you talk about the other big risk factors of high blood pressure, diabetes, or obesity. So what makes you high risk of death from Covid? I'm not going to debate your other arguments. They are as dubious as they were in the last thread that got locked.

Faith -- No one is talking about mandates or lockdowns. If the US had ever really done either of those things we wouldn't be closing in on a million deaths in just the U.S. alone. No other country comes close. Why? Because other countries did have real lockdowns and mandates. But as I said no one in the US is talking about either.

Clo -- you made me laugh -- I know sign language too ;) I also know a good comeback if someone calls me a sheep when they see me in a mask. The nurse at my last infusion was in a store and a man walked up to him and called him a sheep because he had a mask on. The nurse looked him up and down and said "dead man walking" and walked away. Sorry your sister did that to you. That is so depressing ... sending you a virtual hug. You have some people here who understand how you are feeling. Last week I heard the surgeon general of the U.S. talk about his 4 year old daughter getting Covid. She's too young for vaccines, and since she was so young and Covid doesn't hit the young as severely she was doing ok. But was she was still able to spread it to the rest of the entire family. Thankfully the rest were are vaccinated and are also doing ok. You are right to be upset with your sister.

Flowers and poopydoop -- testing before getting together with friends would definitely reduce the risk of seeing others. I would not feel comfortable even with that since those home tests are notorious for false negatives. Still, you both are vaccinated and I don't think either of you have those other co-morbidities that would make you high risk so ... have fun and savor the time you can spend with friends!!!!

Some of the replies here make me want to cry. Did either of you even read the article? High risk people want to get back to real life too. We are probably even more tired of Covid than anyone. But for those truly high risk, the risk isn't getting severely sick. The risk is death.... death in a very horrible way. And it seems as though our lives don't matter to anyone. Our only hope at this point is more therapeutics and as Clo said, no one is talking about them anymore. Even the ones that have been talked about so far need to be taken quickly after symptoms appear and you can only get them with a positive PCR test that takes several days to get back. Basically you have to get a PCR test the moment you have a sniffle and hope it comes back in time for the med to do any good, and hope you can even find the med. Once it's easier to get and testing is much faster I will feel a lot better.

I posted this to hopefully get some understanding and empathy and care about what millions of high risk people are dealing with. Should have known that there are some who really don't give a crap as long as they can live. (And Van, I know you grouped yourself into the high risk category and came across as willing to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. Maybe you are high risk and are that that noble. But you missed the point of the article. IT'S NOT about MANDATES!)

I don't expect the whole world to stop to "protect' me. I believe in being personally responsible. Believe me, I have done all the right things for the last two years and longer. Even before Covid I did the safe thing. I also don't believe on forcing vaccine mandates. I don't necessarily want mask mandates. I would like for everyone to do the right thing.

People should respect themselves and others. More importantly people don't know you are immune compromised unless you tell them. My doctor nephew and psychiatrist sister bought me some shirts with " I'm immune compromised. (Big red letters) I like everyone-from a distance" (small red letters). My other niece (nurse) bought me a shirt that says "Immune compromised. I hate wearing a mask too." All are printed on front and back. I think they were supposed to be a gag gift after I said I felt like I should wear a billboard so people would know and understand. I'd feel safer. Lol... So I wore them out this week. The guy at the gas station looked at me funny when I got out with a mask on and then smiled at me once he read the immune compromised. He asked what the little letters said (from the other side of the pumps) The people at the pharmacy smiled and took a step back. And the person at Walmart (didn't have enough for a pickup order) took a step back away from me and put on a mask while in the self service area. I went to these businesses during the slowest time of their operations.(yes I ask those types of questions)

You can't ever really control what others do. But if people are aware - I think the majority want to do the right thing. I'm going to try the shirts next time I have to go out--see if it makes a difference again. I did feel sorta silly but safer. Lol....

I am vaccinated and would never put anyone at risk if I wasn’t feeling well.
I feel for you! Makes me think twice about masking up . I’ve been a little lax lately.

It is scarey when you have to go to the hospital and either let someone go in by themselves or be the one going in.

I'm not going to argue with you either. My position is non-negotiable. The government overreach has gone too far, especially here in Canada. The mandates must end and society must open back up. If you're afraid of covid, then hide. Society should not shut down and have its Constitution shredded because you're scared. I've drawn my line in the sand.

If you've survived a covid infection with mild symptoms and no vaccine you are not high risk.

I've been immune compromised forever due to being on prednisone for over 2 years. And I also had covid. Despite that, I don't expect the world to be put on hold for me. There is more than one thing at stake in society. This virus is not deadly enough to warrant the measures we're seeing. The mandates are being lifted all over the world. Authorities clearly agree with what I'm saying.
