Funny, because even the pharmacist when they called me about the interaction of Imuran with Allopurinol also asked if the doctor told me about the possible side effects of this drug. Of course, he didn't and it amazes me how easily they prescribe this stuff because it sure doesn't sound like something I want to try and take a chance on! Pharmacist said to monitor and watch for pain in your right side of the abdomen and it's possible for your skin to start turning yellow (kidney issues), possible fainting, dizzyness etc... I'll pass, because at least I know what to expect with Budesonide. Furthermore, how is taking either going to tell me if Stelara is working? The only way to tell is when he decides to have me do the next blood work to see if the Serum Ustekinumab value comes up to where it should be. He just doesn't want me to be miserable in the meantime. I just looked up Imuran and see some people reporting no issues with being on it for 2 years while others mention panic attacks and anxiety while taking it. Honestly, all these drugs we are put on are a crap shoot.
Wow, that's pretty irresponsible your doctor didn't tell you the possible side effects of imuran. You have to do all sorts of labwork while on it to monitor your blood counts--it was weekly for the first month and then I think monthly for the next several months (I only lasted a month on it and then said I'm not doing this to myself anymore). And I agree with you--how will you know which is working if you're on both? I don't mean to scare you away from it though. A lot of people seem to do well on it for years. And for some people, if they do get nausea, it goes away after a month or two. I just couldn't tolerate it at all and I usually do pretty well on most GI meds I've taken. Good luck with whatever you decide to try!
Yeah, you need the blood test Flowers mentioned before starting it, but that doesn't show if you'll respond to it or not have any side effects. That's to make sure you don't have a potentially deadly side effect from it--bone marrow suppression.
