Been one year today still alive. Stoma works great Peri stomal skin good shape. My right hand still doesn't work right due to nerve damage otherwise okay.

Thanks Sara.
Did post op with just Tylenol,open surgery. Did not want narcotics. That was fun.
But my young female gi surgeon did a outstanding job. Was a septic mess.

Hi, Old Mike-- thanks for updating us! And you named your stoma "Laurie", right? (After your surgeon.) Good to know that you feel well except for the nerve damage to hand. That's definitely a bummer. Was it from incompetent phlebotomy during the surgery? Hoping your wife recovered fully from her broken wrists ... / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Wifes wrists recovered, she was out at pickleball lessons last week. She is 78,I told her
if you trip,goodby wrists. Her DEXA bone scans are not good.
Don't know how they screwed up my Ulnar nerve or where the damage is. Could have been just
supine position for a couple hours,or central line they had to put in since I was crashing on the table.,
Yes Laurie is named after its mommy Laura, Death Vader for rectum since it tried ti kill me.
Whole thing was quite an experience,she said rectum was falling apart in her hands when she got to it.
So have 95% at least of colon and short rectal stump,she just disconnected and cut out the dead/infected parts. Strange thing is I dont seem to have UC anymore.

Happy Stomaversary!! I am so very glad that you made it.

Sepsis is no joke.... I've had it 2 times now, coded after 2 surgeries... And am forever grateful for my colorectal surgeon. From my colostomy up I am in pretty good shape. It's the part they left behind that's giving me fits. I think once that is removed most of my symptoms will stop too. Every time they go in and trim on it I feel better and better. LOL. .. It's just that darn coding. They don't want to go back in unless they absolutely have to. For some reason when they touch the Hartmanns pouch I start have a very difficult time. I just had my kidneys operated on and had no problems... But let them touch that pouch and all heck breaks loose..

I'm sorry about your hand. It's the pits having residual issues because if a health battle. It just doesn't seem fair to have battled so hard and end up with a war wound scar...... (For me it's my memory...)

So do you even need to take meds now?

Great if you don't feel any UC symptoms, Mike! (Way-to-go!!!!) But it sounds like your wife should take up Tai Chi or another exercise safer for bones, or at least wear protective braces on wrists & knees, maybe elbows, too. *** about your rectum literally falling apart when surgeon removed it, I think Keith (KS1905) posted a similar description about his colectomy in past yrs-- that what got removed looked like rotten meat and he started feeling better right away w/o it inside his body. *** Best wishes to you & family for the coming holiday season. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

Havent taken and UC meds since 1982,no meds now.
Was septic,they washed whole body cavity out with chlorohexadine.
3 JP drains.
Had large pus pocket in muscle behind left kidney,needed interventional radiology drain placed for
2 months,at one point was draiing 100ml pus/day. They used a fluroscope with big tv screen so doc could see
where he was placing the drain in real time. I could also watch live the whole inside of body cavity.
Interesting pain free procedure,numb skin,assistant knocks me out for 30 seconds while doc shoves drain through back muscles,wake up and watch drain placement into pus pocket.

I was shocked biopsy only showed consistant with severe UC,doc saw no cancer.
Lets see what else,pulling the Foley was fun,bladder irritation for about 2 months.
Did not sleep one hour in about 20 days, watched clock all night in hosp room.
No saliva for about 2 months.
Missed grandsons birthday last year,will be there today.

geez, i step away for a bit, and you old timers are off having fun and games without me - OM, nice to see you're still kicking ! sorry to read you're still having some challenges - happy stomaversary - hope things continue to be OK !
