Imuran for UC

Morning, so I started taking Imuran yesterday for the first time and after a couple of hours I could feel my stomach contracting and cramping, awful really as it lasted for a few hours. Has anyone got past this after taking Imuran? I did not expect such a reaction. I'm hoping that as each day passes it will ease up as my body gets used to it.
Also does anyone know if Imuran contains asprin?

Poppie, I never had this happen while on Imuran, however, I always took it on a full stomach after a meal. You may want to call your drs office or send a message on your patient portal.

I know in the past you were on Humira, what happened with that & what other meds have you tried?

Never had that happen, but it gave me really bad nausea despite taking it after meals. I had to take anti-nausea meds every day, which made me constipated.Then I had to take Miralax daily for the constipation!

I was flaring when I started taking Imuran so my whole gut was a mess. By biggest complaint was that it gave me nausea and I had to increase my dose very slowly to help with that. Are you taking it on an empty stomach or with a meal? I have found that if I take mine at dinner around 3/4's of the way through my meal it helps the nausea.

Thanks all of you for your reply but I just cant help but wonder why on earth would you all think that I would take it on an empty stomach???? I mean really...its a given with any medicine not to take it on an empty stomach. Anyway yesterday I was fine, today I have a headache, so it feels like my body is trying to get used to it. It could be an interim Med and if this doesn't work, as Stelara has been mentioned.

Some medicines must be taken on an empty stomach... some must be taken with food... and a whole bunch don't matter when you take them. That's why.

Update: I experienced a severe reaction to the Imuran that almost necessitated me going to see my doctor. So, I stopped taking it right away and resumed Humira instead. Later, I went to visit my rheumatologist whose blood tests confirmed that I was in a major Lupus flare-up, ironically not related to the Humira after all.

Thank you, yes I hope so, I'm concerned now that my daughter is showing signs of IBD. My appointment to see my Gastro is tomorrow and I think my daughter will have to mention that she's having trouble as well.

For my daughter it is mainly constipation when she tries to poop, but sometimes she cannot go and she says it feels like poop is stuck in her rectum, and so I feel like that's a sign that something is wrong.

I had constipation off and on for years before I got UC. When I ate a really clean diet with lots of fruit and veggies, it seemed to go away. Right when I first got UC, my first symptoms were a little blood on the t.p. and then severe constipation for about a week or 2. What is your daughter's diet like? I would look at diet, hydration and exercise first before jumping to IBD for some constipation. Metamucil would be a good thing to try. If that doesn't work, Miralax for a few days could help.
