Hello. Would appreciate any feedback on using sutab for colonoscopy prep. Have procedure in a few days and am a little overwhelmed reading the instructions. I've had UC for over 20 years, and have don different preps-last one was in 2018-miralax/Gatorade prep. I also did the pills many years ago, and it was a horrible experience. Now is that I have congestive heart failure, have been cleared by my cardiologist for this procedure, but I'm looking at the massive amount of fluid required for this, and wondering how I will be able to do it. It looks like dose 1 and dose 2, night before and day of, require 12 pills and 50 ounces each of fluid. I also see old posts here suggesting that this prep causes the most nausea and vomiting. Would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Did your cardiologist know about this prep you are taking? Does your GI know about your congestive heart failure?

When I was having chest pains and my BP was higher they gave me some type of prep that you didn't have to drink a ton of water/liquid all at once. It worked slower but it did do the job. It's been awhile and I have forgotten the name of it. I'll try to find it.

I just know my GI was very careful that we didn't have any issues.

I took it last colonoscopy. I found it easy to tolerate. I have another one coming up next month. Have script for it again. Not sure this time around. It takes a bit longer for it to work. Need to be an appointment at 6 am . Might be up all night Last pills are to be taken at 11pm ,

Thank you. I'm glad to hear that you tolerated the prep. In regard to cardiac issues, yes GI knows about the CHF, and I had to get cardiac clearance for the procedure, but I don't think they know about this prep. I have talked to both GI and cardiologist about my concerns but didn't realize at the time what this prep required. I will be reaching out to them tomorrow. I really appreciate all of this feedback, and it is very helpful.

Congestive heart failure is no joke, and your gastroenterologist is negligent to Rx Suprep for your C-scope cleanse, especially if the Mirelax-combo worked successfully at your last scope!!!!! In fact, an experienced RN forum member here (Jujub/Judy2) recommended pairing Mirelax with non-flavored Pedialyte to extra-sensitive UCers a good while back. (Gatorade can include artificial colors + other junk.) I took her advice, then my gastroenterologist reported "good quality of prep" on my subsequent C-scope results. *** It's irresponsible, even sadistic of MDs to Rx heavy chemical cleanses that keep the patient awake all night with purging up to Zero Hour of scope appointment, IMO!!!!!! My old GI said sutab causes the most nausea and vomiting. I never tried it and never had a GI recommend it. The Miralax prep made me very sick. I always request GoLytely. Definitely check with your doctors regarding the heart concerns.

Just another data point — I’ve used suprep (the liquid) and don’t have nausea with it. And for me it’s always seemed milder that the gallon prep. None of the preps taste good. That gallon method just seems too harsh for my body but maybe I should give it a try again as I was probably flaring some last time I used it. My main complaint with all the preps is they give me too much diarrhea where it’s constant for hours and my poor back door gets so irritated it bleeds. I’ve learned better techniques through the years that help, like only using wipes and tons of calmoseptine from the very start.

Hello,

Thanks to all for your help and support. Here is what happened: After more calls to cardiology and GI, I was assured that I was ok to do the surtab. There was no bad taste to it, and I tolerated the first dose fairly well. By the second dose (at midnight) I began having severe vomiting. When I went in this morning for the procedure, I was on the gurney, ready to go complete with iv, and began having atrial fib, which I have not had before. The procedure was cancelled, and I am following up with cardiologist. I will never do that prep again, and unless GI and cardiologist can come up with a better solution, I don't think I will be able to do these proceedures. It was awful to go through that, and then have it cancelled, on top of the worry of the cardio issues.

OMG! How scary and awful that happened to you! And you did your due diligence first, consulting with the cardiologist and GI and still this happened. Well I am glad you are okay at the end of it all. Honestly, they - the ubiquitous "they" - need to come up with a better way to prep the bowels for all of us. It's such torture and look how hard it is on the body! You are proof.

The gallon preps contain electrolytes and are said to be the least problematic for people with cardiac issues. Did they do blood testing on you to see if anything such as potassium or masnesium or other electrolytes were the issue?

Have you done the gallon prep in the past? I'm also thinking you shouldn't do the split dose.

I'm sorry that happened to you. How scary. And also how frustrating to suffer through the prep and vomiting and then have the scope cancelled.

RE gallon prep including electrolyte solution: UCers with colon 4 feet in length or shorter may have the option to use 1/2 gallon (64 oz. liquid) prep. That makes it easier to finish purging by midnight of the day preceding C-scope appointment. RE Odyssy's prep outcome: a-fib is no joke; it can lead to a stroke! As we age, we have to be extra cautious about any chemicals being RXed for us. I'm sure there are disagreements among experienced MDs regarding what should be avoided, which may never reach our attention. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)
