New research reveals that vitamin B12 may play a pivotal role in regenerating damaged intestinal tissues in those enduring this chronic disease. Researchers examined how vitamin B12 impacts cellular reprogramming and tissue regeneration after discovering a vitamin B12 shortage in the gut bacteria.
Inadequate vitamin B12 levels inhibited successful cellular reprogramming and tissue repair, disrupting gene function. However, supplying vitamin B12 supplements improved cellular reprogramming efficiency.

”Supplementation with vitamin B12 increases the efficiency of reprogramming both in mice and in cultured cells,..
Vitamin B12 supplementation also accelerates tissue repair in a model of ulcerative colitis. We conclude that vitamin B12, through its key role in one-carbon metabolism and epigenetic dynamics, improves the efficiency of in vivo reprogramming and tissue repair.”

I am just one person, so my experience does not dispute this study's findings... but I had to laugh because during this flare my B12 levels were through the roof and I was told to discontinue supplementation! ;)

Last time I had blood work done, several months ago, my B12 levels were “outside the upper limit of the normal range”. So I stopped supplementing as well.
I’m going to start taking my Bragg’s Nutritional Yeast every day again

Well. Not so fast. My wife showed me an article last night… that nutritional yeast is not good for those of us with bowl issues.

Well that's always the problem. One study says X is good, then the next study says X is bad.

Caveat—I am not against supplements and I take several myself. But just because something is labeled a “supplement” instead of medication does not mean it’s better because it’s “natural”. There’s research that shows that supplementation in chemical form is not really the best method and supplements are not regulated.
There’s lots of studies out there but nothing has ever been shown to cure UC. Again, not against supplements, just urging caution in taking huge amounts of supplements.
