Incontinence during scope prep?

I have never had anything like this happen before. I am doing prep for my colonoscopy in the morning and don't have much control. All of a sudden I get a warm feeling and it's just coming out! I'm not flaring ... had been in a solid remission. Even during my worst flares I never pooped my pants. This is freaking me out. Has anyone had this happen before where the prep just comes out with no warning?

Do you feel the need to go and then it just comes out...before you can get to the bathroom? Or.....

Do you not feel like you have to go and it's just suddenly coming out anyway?.

Not to scare you .. but with my RVF that's exactly what happened. It still happens when what's left decides to excrete mucus ... Just suddenly a warm feeling and it's coming out.

I'm not saying that's what it is. Its the only thing I can sorta relate to it.

I'm sorry you are going thru this. Hang in there. Hopefully you'll get some answers during the scope.

I have about 1 second notice and then it comes out and I can't stop it. I have some pads here that I lined my 3rd pair of panties with so it's not messy and it's all clear now.

With a fistula wouldn't I have had other symptoms? I have been in what I think is a solid remission.

I used Crystal Lite lemonade this time instead of gatorade. It's much easier to drink and this is the first prep where I didn't feel sick or have to lay on the bathroom floor because of being lightheaded. But maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know which is worse ... incontinence or almost passing out. Man I hate these preps.

The 2nd half of the prep was better and the incontinence thankfully stopped. That was so weird.

Scope went well. No active colitis. Some old scarring. She removed a couple polyps but the doc said they weren't anything to worry about. I do have some mild diverticulitis on the left side. She took a lot of biopsies and said I will have the results in a few days. Happy it's over and still in remission.

Maybe the artificial sweeteners had a hand in the urgent activity during your prep? Good it wasn't during the entirety of the process.

Awesome news about your remission! I hope all polyp biopsies are benign.

Glad the scope went well. I agree with Quincy that it could have been the artificial sweeteners that caused issues. Hope the biopsies are all ok.

Glad it evened out and the scope went well.

Artificial sugar sometimes does that to me.... So maybe it was that.

I hope you stay in remission.

The first accident occurred shortly after I started drinking the prep so I think that 1st episode must have come from the Dulcolax. I drink Crystal Lite a few times a week and never had any issues with it so not sure that the artificial sweeteners were the cause of the incontinence, especially since it ended during the 2nd half of the prep. It was a very weird experience and definitely gave me more empathy for those who have that happen during bad flares.

I mentioned the incontinence to the nurse and doc doing the scope and they both said it happens sometimes. I've had a lot of scopes and it never happened before. Hope it never does again, but now that I know it's possible I will be better prepared next time.

I am on the 2 year scope schedule though I tend to stretch that by a few months each time. Thankfully, I don't have to think about this again for a while.

I will let you know what the biopsies say when I get them back. The doc took LOTS of biopsies ... more than I remember with other scopes -- at least 10, plus I assume there will be biopsies on the polyps she removed. The scope report said there were 6 pseudo polyps that were removed or sampled in the sigmoid and 3 "diminutive" polyps removed from the rectum.

On my scopes... My GI takes at least 8 samples plus whatever else he removes. I guess they are carefully watching. He always says he is trusting what he sees but needs to verify.... So I wouldn't be concerned.

I hope your test results turn out good. Crossing my fingers and saying a prayer.

I'm sure it was just the dulcolax etc. I never take the pills and just do the miralax with some plain water and coconut water. I'm so glad everything looked good! Keep us posted on the biopsies. I have not had a scope since Nov of 2020 and doc hasn't mentioned it. Its been less than 10 years since diagnoses so I'm not sure what the protocol is.

Biopsy results back. There were 10 biopsies plus the polyps. No signs of colitis. No dysplasia detected in any sample.

Colon has completely recovered from the prep.

As far as no control ā€” I didnā€™t think much about your post at first and then I realized that yes this happens to me. Itā€™s just that itā€™s second nature to me now and I had no idea it wasnā€™t ā€œnormalā€.

I have to camp out in the bathroom for hours when I do my preps because of it. I literally spend 4-5 hours in there because I know if I leave Iā€™ll have an accident. I take a blanket in with me and my iPad and phone. When my rear gets tired of sitting on the throne Iā€™ll sit on the floor but wonā€™t stray farther than 2 steps from the throne. My bowels turn completely liquid very early on and thereā€™s no sphincter control when itā€™s just liquid for me. Or maybe itā€™s that my gut is in too tight of a spasm that it just keeps expelling anything there. I dunno but this is why I hate my preps so much. My anus gets extremely sore too from the constant expelling. I always end up in the tub at some point to soothe it but have had accidents in there too even though by then itā€™s only clear liquid coming out.

You mean you guys usually have time to go back and forth to the bathroom during prep? šŸ˜³ Has never happened for me.

Flowers girl, thatā€™s my experience too, makes for a not very relaxing bath šŸ˜. Always educational on this site - I thought that was just the way it was. Not surprising though as it happens often enough even without the help of the Ducolax. (Less often now I have to say, so maybe next prep will be better too!) Fabulous that the results were so good CC!

Yep I've never had an accident from the prep. It feels more like when you need to pee, so it's uncomfortable but you can at least hold it until you get to the bathroom. Scary to think that this can happen! Last time i even walked my dog round the block....

I've never had a prep like this before. I always had time to walk (not run) to the bathroom ... never even close to an accident. But at some point in all other preps I would get nauseated and light headed and would end up laying on the bathroom floor for a few minutes.

Sorry to hear this is your normal, Flowers & Midge. You have my sympathy.

Even though I always had time to get to the bathroom not so sure I would ever be brave enough to walk my dog. Poopydoop, you should get a medal for that smile
