Hi Quincy,
High blood pressure is what got my mom's kidneys. Being of the old fashioned Polish decent she never believed in seeing a doctor for anything. When her mom (my busha) died she was 96 years old and never seen a doctor once in her life (when she had her children she just called up her next door neighbor and asked them if they could come over for a second!). Now remember this was years and years ago. But my mom had high blood pressure for years and years but never any symptoms (that's the reason why it's called the silent killer). The biopsy on my mom's kidney came back as glomuernephritis (that definitely is not spelled correctly). We were hoping for the acute nephritis like Beth now is. That is your best bet to have come back as a diagnosis. As a matter of fact my mom is in the hospital now because her access port that is used for dialysis is now infected (a common thing to happen). So, for someone who started out in life never seeing a doctor everything eventually caught up with her. She also has a colostomy now due to a blockage that occurred from diverticulitis (and she has that for about five years). What I have learned from seeing her suffer all these years from ailments which could of prevented through a yearly check up is that it's better to just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and go see a doctor for a medical checkup, have labs ran, get that blood pressure check, know your cholesteral levels, get your yearly mammos and screening colonoscopy when you turn 50 even if you are not having any symptoms of anything. My husband is now 53 years old and we argue every night about an appointment I made for him with my GI doc coming up in a couple of weeks. He is over 50 and I am forcing him (as he puts it)to have a screening colonoscopy done. He also came from a strong ethnic Polish background and was taught that if it's working properly than don't touch it. His father died of colon cancer (grant it he was 80 years old). But, like I told my husband last night, sometimes when you roll the dice and gamble with your health - you don't win.
