Watery diarrhea

Well after my daughter's first flare in june she was put on pentasa and pred and had a complete 180 no symptoms at all for 3 months and she weaned off from pred last aug. 17. Now she has watery diarrhea for 5 days now, she's not eating any solid foods only peptamen jr. (peptide milk) and lots of fluids including glucolyte. She has 6-8 bm's a day all watery yellow brown in color no mucus, pain or blood, did test for occult blood and ova and parasite both are negative.

Went to her GI and she told me that children are prone to diarrhea maybe she has rotarix virus (common virus in children suffering D) and just told me to observe and rehydrate every time she poop's and give hidrasec 2x day. Now my question is is this a sign of flare to come? or this is normal for UC? or this is not related to UC at all? What foods shall i give to lessen the watery D?

Quincy and the gang please help me!!! your opinions matters the most :)

P.S.

  Doctor also weaned her from pentasa from 250mg 2x day to 1x day 9/01

Hi Enan! Just my thought, maybe its the pentasa? I've had D after my GI said to increase it from 1.5g/day to 3 g/day. After 5 days of D I finally decided by my own to "restart" by not taking anything except Pred. After 1 day, my BMs weren't watery anymore but still am having 5-6 BMs. Am currently testing if my Aloe supplements can get a grip of my UC again (I had it for my UC since 2003 w/o any UC med and it did just fine until last year). If my bleeding goes nuts again, I'll stop my AMP and try Pentasa but I'll start maybe 500mg/day until my gut stabilizes on it.

Hopefully your daughter gets well soon! And thanks for hooking me up with the Pentasa rep!

Thanks for the reply, maybe but she was taking pentasa for over 3 months now without any D. Well im just hoping that it will go away in a few days.

No problem ach13 hoping that pentasa will put you in remission. Also I've just found out that imuran, entocort and salofalk enemas are available here in the Phil, and remicade is by order basis.

How old is your daughter? My son (2, no UC) had a nasty stomach bug about 9 months ago and I swear he had diarhea 5-7 times a day for weeks. I must have taken him to the ped. every week. They kept promising me the d would go away and it finally did.

They did put him on the BRAT diet. Is she not hungry or did her doctor tell you not to do solid foods?

SHe is 2 yrs old, well finally an hour ago i convinced her to eat some porridge wheww :).

BRAT diet?? what is it? Well my daughter just refuses to eat any solid foods until an hour ago. She drinks a lot of milk, water and glucolyte.

The BRAT diet is pretty much bland foods. You could google it or search on the internet for a list of acceptable foods. Basically it is foods that are easy on the tummy. I can't remember specifics....applesauce, bananas, crackers, baked potatos, etc.

And by the way sorry I didn't read your signature or I would have know how old your daughter is!

Hi enan...did the doctor do stool samples to test for bacterial/viral invaders..rather than assuming?

you could use fibre supplements to bulk up the stool a bit.

Children's probiotics would be a good start to replenish her digestive flora.

Was she tested for h.pylori or c.difficile or celiac disease?

Why did the doc take her off the Pentasa if it was working?

Is your daughter consuming any products with artificial sweeteners?? in an attempt for kids to not have too much sugar, many parents carelessley and ignorantly give their kids substitutes.

Is she eating any protein such as eggs? They can be scrambled or made softer with some nice toast..my mom used to make me that, yummm!!

Has she been tested for food allergies?

Did she ever have any bleeding...and how many times a day is she having diarrhea?

Hi quincy she was tested for ova and parasite, occult blood, mucus, negative but no viral test, h.pylori or c.difficile or celiac disease  done yet.

 The GI just lowered her dose of pentasa from 250mg 2 a day to 250 1x a day.

As for the food we cooked her food and we are careful she eats only rice, veggies, rice crackers and her milk (peptamen jr)

Yup she was tested for food allergies, she's allergic to fish

She's been having diarrhea for 5 days now 6-8 watery diarrhea, no blood and occasionally vomits

update:

 Well after 7 days no sign of improvement pedia GI has upped her racecadotril 3xday 210mg sachet for 2 days now.

Now doctor wants her on cefixime (antibiotic),

Rota virus antigen came back negative.

occult blood ova and parasite negative

Still having 7-10 bm a day all watery D no blood no mucus yellow brown in color.

Im just concerned about the antibiotic any input will help thanks a lot guys.

Hi..Your poor daughter to have not improved.

I would take her off the flaxseed oil and the barley greens for now..just in case they are part of the problem.  You can always add them back.

Is she eating?

I don't know about the antibiotic...what does the doctor suspect she may have? Did he do stool samples?

Has she been tested to make sure her liver function tests are OK?
